According to the confessions of its creator Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us could never have been the phenomenal Naughty Dog game series that we know.
In an interview with the LA Times, Naughty Dog’s co-director admitted that for a long time he hadn’t even thought about making a The Last of Us game, but that was a radically different idea.
The story of The Last of Us could have been told differently
Although Naughty Dog seems to be moving on from The Last of Us in the future, as it did to some extent with Uncharted, it is undoubtedly one of Naughty Dog’s strongest licenses. However, it may never have seen the light of day for the first time on the PS3 in 2013. Originally, it was actually a concept thought up by Neil Druckmann at university. He wanted to tell the story of a man and a young girl who go through many heartbreaking trials in a post-apocalyptic world. This was to take the form of a graphic novel.
Even when he started working at Naughty Dog, the idea of proposing the development of a video game did not cross his mind for a long time. Fortunately for him, the studio and many fans, this dystopia did not exist in our reality. Today it is one of the most notable licenses of Naughty Dog and even video games in a broader sense. A heartbreaking story, incredibly human characters and gameplay that skillfully mixes action and survival horror have made it a true video game icon.
But even though fans are clamoring for The Last of Us 3, such a prospect is still uncertain. If Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog believe there is nothing left to tell in this universe, there will be no sequel. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed. In the meantime, the second season of HBO’s excellent adaptation will make up for the shortfall in the first half of next year.
