The Last of Us (HBO): This is how the series performs with the critics

Only a few days left, then the long-awaited series implementation of The Last of Us will finally start on Sky and WOW. The press was able to get a taste of it in advance and the feedback doesn’t look too bad.

It’s not just Playstation fans who can’t wait to see how well the series adaptation of The Last of Us has turned out. Ordinary people still have to wait a few days – the series will start on Sky Q and WOW from January 16th. From then on, one of the nine episodes of the series awaits you every week until the epic reaches its finale on March 13th.

As usual, some press representatives were allowed to take a look in advance and meanwhile the first reviews of the series are already appearing on the internet. If you believe them, the showrunners did a good job along with Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann.

Variety calls the series “a promising, moving zombie saga”. For Empire it is “by far the best video game adaptation ever made”. For Digital Spy it is even the first contender for the best series of the year. Also RollingStone is quite happy, calling the series “a smarter and much better executed The Walking Dead, with higher production values and a smaller and stronger cast”.

However, the series does not get away without critical words. For Entertainment Weekly, the series can’t decide whether it’s an adaptation or a replay – probably in view of the fact that the series sticks very closely to the story of the first game. Some scenes are even based on the game frame by frame and you feel like you’re watching someone play.

For TV Guide the series implementation would have liked to have gone one step further, expanding the existing material and thus opening up new perspectives. For Polygon the series adaptation underpins the strengths of the game, but also underlines its weaknesses. For Gamespot the additions to the story are of particular interest.

It will now also be interesting to see how hardcore fans of the games will deal with the changes that have been made as a result of the adaptation, such as tendrils instead of spores being responsible for spreading the epidemic. After all, they are already because of that beard growth by main actor Pedro Pascal has gone completely out of the paste.
