As is well known, a larger multiplayer offshoot is in the works around The Last of Us. Contrary to initial assumptions, this could even be available not only for PlayStation 5, but also for the older PlayStation 4.
So far we don’t know when the planned multiplayer spin-off of The Last of Us will even be released, but the indications seem to be increasing that it will not only be available on the PlayStation 5, but also on the PlayStation 4 will be. At least that’s what a new job posting on the internet now suggests.
Naughty Dog is currently looking for an Associate Multiplayer Quality Assurance Tester – and it is essential that they have experience with both PS4 and PS5. The tender suggests that The Last of Us Multiplayer should be a cross-gen title – like the last main game The Last of Us: Part II.
The following line of text in the job offer shows that this really is The Last of Us: “Join us as we bring that same sensitivity and passion to our first standalone multiplayer project!” Although the successful franchise is not specifically mentioned, there is generally only one multiplayer game that is known to be in the works at Naughty Dog – The Last of Us. So as long as the studio doesn’t surprise us completely and announce another project, then it’s about this title.
When the time comes, it should be interesting to see whether the multiplayer title will also appear directly for the PS4 or at least be reserved for the PS5 as a time-exclusive to further increase the sales figures for the console now that the delivery bottlenecks appear to have been eliminated.
Overall, PlayStation’s in-house studios have a solid history of bringing their games to earlier hardware. Sony Santa Monica didn’t bring God of War Ragnarök to the PS4 until November 2022.
Naughty Dog, in the person of co-president Neil Druckmann, confirmed during the 2022 Summer Fest that The Last of Us multiplayer is in the works. There is still no release date.
