Plenty of Nintendo and Zelda fans were eagerly awaiting the release of Tears of the Kingdom, so strong sales shouldn’t come as a surprise. However, even the biggest supporters might be surprised at how good the first reports are.
Zelda is cult and with Breath of the Wild the brand could be catapulted into completely different spheres. So it’s no wonder that Tears of the Kingdom has been well received by fans and critics alike. The first sales figures show how popular the game really is.

According to Christopher Dring of Gamesindustry.biz, the game was already the eighth most successful Zelda of all time in terms of units sold in the first weekend. The Switch adventure has already left The Wind Waker, Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds behind. Even the launch period of Hogwarts Legacy was surpassed, which recently reported absurdly high sales figures.
However, Dring qualifies here that he can only use the sales of the physical version of Tears of the Kingdom for this comparison. Nintendo is known to be very reluctant when it comes to releasing digital numbers. In this segment he estimates Hogwarts Legacy as more successful.
Compared to Breath of the Wild, the release of Tears of the Kingdom is said to have been 173 percent more successful. In terms of sales alone, Link’s new adventure is the fourth most successful Zelda of all time. Only Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild are ahead of him.
This immensely strong start is not the only success Nintendo has had in recent days. Tears of the Kingdom is already one of the best rated games of all time. A movie might be in the pipeline, and speed runners are already breaking the first records. So the corks are likely to pop at the Japanese company.
