With The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo currently has one of the hottest irons for 2023 in the video game fire. On May 12, 2023, the time has finally come and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be released. The sequel to the legendary Breath of the Wild promises a little more of everything. Eiji Aonuma, the producer of the series, now granted a detailed look. He auditioned live for about ten minutes during a Nintendo Direct.

First some good news: Tears of the Kingdom development has been fully completed. So nothing stands in the way of a punctual release.

The presentation started on the Hyrule mainland, which Aonuma says has changed a lot. High up in the sky you can see the flying sky islands, which should already be familiar from previous trailers. You can reach it over rocks that regularly crumble off. With one of Link’s new abilities, you’ll rewind her in time and soar to the lofty heights. According to Aonuma, this is just one of several ways to reach the Sky Isles. It goes down, for example, if you just jump off.

The floating platforms come in different sizes and, in addition to artificially created structures, also offer their own vegetation and enemy types. The so-called constructs are reminiscent of floating and significantly weaker versions of the guardians. Tragically, the example combat shows that the weapons still break fairly quickly.

However, Link also has another new ability: In Tears of the Kingdom, he can connect two objects with one another and thus create new weapons. For example, thanks to synthesis, Aonuma couples a rock to a stick. But branches and pitchforks can also be linked, as can many other elements. For example, if you connect an arrow to a monster’s eye, it gains homing abilities. By the way, enemies with synthesis weapons can also roam around.

Synthesis also helps with locomotion by building your own vehicles and boats. Several linked tree trunks form a raft, and you can use the Ultra Hand ability to separate them again. Antique fans on the sides finally provide the necessary driving force. That would also solve the mystery of how to craft the vehicles seen in the previous trailers.

But that’s not the end of new skills. The jump in the ceiling is also known from earlier videos. With this you glide elegantly through the ceiling of a room to the level above. You also leave caves in this way. This makes climbing a mountain much easier.

So many new elements are waiting for you in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. You can try them out, for example, on a new version of the OLED switch, which has a special design that suits the game. It will be available from April 28, 2023, punctually two weeks before the release.
