Every food in the supermarket has its own expiration date, but cell phones also have an expiration date, so to speak, in the form of regular (or no longer available) security updates.
When it comes to smartphones, it is not always clear when a particular model is used expire
but Xiaomi apparently wanted to change that and has now published a list for its own models.
This includes the release date and when the patches stop.
A short overview of the long list
2 year guarantee: Xiaomi generally guarantees you two years of tech support. This means regular patches, new operating system updates and regular security patches.
In one long list of all devices (the link takes you to Xiaomi’s message) you will find all the details about every Xiaomi device. We have summarized some of the popular ones in a short table:
Model | Release-Datum | Security Update EOL | |
---|---|---|---|
Redmi Note 13 Pro | January 2024 | January 2028 | |
Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G | January 2024 | January 2028 | |
Redmi 12 | June 2023 | June 2027 | |
Xiaomi Pad 6 | June 2023 | June 2026 | |
Redmi Note 12 | March 2023 | March 2026 | |
POCO C55 | January 2023 | January 2027 | |
Xiaomi 12 Pro | March 2022 | January 2026 | |
Redmi 10C | February 2022 | February 2025 | |
Redmi Pad | October 2022 | July 2025 | |
POCO M4 Pro | January 2022 | January 2025 | |
Redmi Note 10 Pro | March 2021 | March 2024 | |
Mi 11 Ultra | April 2021 | April 2024 |
EOL: This means end-of-life, i.e. the end of the service. As you can see, many devices will receive updates for longer than the promised two years.
That’s why security updates are important
A smartphone initially continues to function even without security updates. Similar to food, it doesn’t always mean immediate spoilage – but then you do put yourself at greater risk.
The risk of viruses or malware increases with old devices because the security gaps are no longer patched and are eventually known to the Internet.
So if you use online banking or similarly sensitive data on your cell phone, you should find out exactly when support for your smartphone will expire.
You can find out what you can generally do with old technical devices that you no longer need in the following article:
In addition to security, compatibility is also an important factor in the absence of updates. If the software on your cell phone is too old, over time more and more apps will no longer work or will only work incorrectly.
Do you own an older Xiaomi model from the list and perhaps didn’t know when exactly support will end? Did you know about the end of security patches? Do you use sensitive data on your cell phone? Which Xiaomi model do you use? Feel free to write to us in the comments.
