In The Lord of the Rings, Frodo Baggins is taken in by his Uncle Bilbo after losing his parents. But how old was Frodo when the terrible misfortune happened?
Frodo Baggins, portrayed by Elijah Wood, is the main character of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. As the nephew of the protagonist of “The Hobbit”, Bilbo Baggins, the desire for adventure runs in his family, so to speak. Over the course of “The Lord of the Rings” we learn that Frodo was raised by Bilbo and was adopted by him after his parents died.
However, in director Peter Jackson's films, Frodo's parents are barely mentioned, almost not at all. Her death occurred when Frodo was very young. What had happened?
Lord of the Rings: At the age of 12, Frodo loses his parents in a boat accident
Frodo's parents are Drogo and Primula Baggins. The two die in a boat accident on the River Brandywine. Frodo is just there 12 years old. We see the brandy wine when Frodo, Sam (Sean Astin) as well as Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) flee from the Nazgul in “The Fellowship of the Ring” and cross the brandy wine on a ferry.
Before Frodo was given the name Frodo, JRR Tolkien actually wanted to call him something else. His first choice was Bingo Baggins. But that was probably a little too crazy for him.
The exact circumstances of Drogo and Primula's deaths were never clarified. As so often in his works, JRR Tolkien leaves things open and only writes that the stories have been handed down and that there are inconsistencies.
So rumors would spread that Drogo and Primula Baggins had an argument before her death, which led Primula to push Drogo off the ship. Others claim that Drogo Baggins' massive weight caused the boat to sink.
Bilbo Baggins only adopted Frodo years after Drogo and Primula's fatal accident
Bilbo is not actually Frodo's uncle, but actually a second cousin of Frodo's father, Drogo.
Bilbo and Drogo's fathers are cousins. Both of their grandfathers (and thus Frodo's great-grandfather) are Mungo Baggins. Drogo's father is named Fosco Baggins, Bilbo's father is named Bungo.
Only when Frodo is 21 years old does Bilbo finally adopt him, not out of compassion, as he tells Frodo in the extended edition of “The Fellowship of the Ring”, but because Frodo is the only one of Bilbo's countless relatives who has guts.
Bilbo himself is 99 years old at the time he adopts Frodo. At the beginning of The Lord of the Rings, Frodo has only lived with Bilbo for around 12 years. (We remember: Frodo celebrates his 111th birthday at the beginning of the trilogy.)
Lord of the Rings Quiz: How well do you know Middle-earth?
What else are the people of dwarves called?
Unfortunately, Bilbo, Frodo and the Bagginses don't play a role in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. So we shouldn't expect Mungo, Dudo, Dora, Largo, Ponto, Balbo or any other Baggins in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3.
