After lackluster reviews across the board, DaedalicEntertainment has apologized for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
As the reviews for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum began to emerge, it quickly became clear that the game wasn’t perfect. Reviews score low almost across the board, with the game currently sitting at a 36 on Metacritic. In turn, Daedalic Entertainment apologized to gamers and promised that patches and improvements are on the way.
“We apologize for the unpleasant experience many of you had with the launch of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum,” the statement read. “We acknowledge and deeply regret that this game did not live up to the expectations we set for ourselves or our dedicated community. Please accept our sincere apologies for any disappointment this may have caused.”
The post goes on to say that Daedalic values the various feedback it receives from players, and that it has been “analyzing construct criticism and suggestions,” which many have shared. “Our development team has been working hard to resolve the bugs and technical issues that many of you have encountered. We are committed to providing you with patches so you can enjoy the game to the fullest.”
Unsurprisingly, we haven’t been given a window on when we can expect patches for the game, but the game only came out this week, and it’s not in tip-top shape yet. Many reviews pointed to a series of technical issues, lackluster gameplay, incomplete visuals, and even a few game-breaking bugs.
Gollum was initially expected to launch in 2021, but was pushed back to 2022 and then again to 2023. Latency doesn’t necessarily lead to better games, as evidenced by the popular response, but it’s important to remember that game development is tricky, and often made harder by a number of factors.
