There are many dwarves in Tolkien’s legendarium. They are also known as Durin’s people. This is because they come from the same bloodline, as do Gimli and Durin IV?

The dwarven people in Tolkien’s legendarium are often referred to as Durin’s people. Strictly speaking, this is not entirely correct, as not all dwarves in Middle-earth are descended from Durin. However, most of the dwarves in The Lord of the Rings come from Durin’s line in the Third Age.

The fact that Durin IV (Owain Arthur) from “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” comes from this line can probably be determined from the name alone. But what about Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) from the “Lord of the Rings” films? Is he a descendant of Durin IV?

Gimli is a distant relative of Durin IV

Since Durin IV lived more than 3,000 before Gimli, the relationship can of course only be remotely identified. But it is no exaggeration to say that Gimli is a direct descendant of Durin – albeit across many generations. However, Gimli does not have a serious claim to the throne.

Gimli’s great-great-grandfather Borin is the younger son of King Nain II and never sat on the throne of Khazad-dum himself. The claim to the throne was Borin’s older brother, Dáin I, who incidentally is the great-grandfather of Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) from “The Hobbit”.

Incidentally, it is not clear how many generations Gimli descended from Durin IV. Tolkien has no detailed family tree regarding this. It is only from Durin VI onwards that there is a reasonable ancestry list in Tolkien’s legendarium.

This is where the series diverges from the books

While Durin IV in “The Rings of Power” is the son of Durin III, in Tolkien’s books the name Durin can never be given to two people living at the same time. Each “new” Durin is a reincarnation of the previous one.

If one were to trace Gimli’s family tree, Durin VI is the great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather of Gimli. Since Durin IV goes back a few more generations, you can roughly imagine how far apart Durin IV and Gimli actually are. Hangs at least two Urs before that!

The second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has come to an end with the eighth episode. So far it is not clear whether “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season 3 will come. The consequences are already being worked on, but there is no official statement from Amazon yet.
