- The mighty Valar play an important role in the Tolkien Legendarium.
- However, they were not discussed in Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” films.
- Amazon’s “The Rings of Power” series could now shed more light on the Valar.
On September 2, 2022, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will start streaming on Amazon Prime Video and deepen Tolkien’s fantasy legendarium. We learn more about the history of Middle-earth and the entire world of Arda, on which Middle-earth (a continent) is located. Above all, the Valar play an important role, which we will now explain to you.
The Valar are gods in a sense, but they have no creative power of their own, only Eru Illúvatar can create things in Tolkien’s works, which gives him the title of god over Arda. The Valar are thus sub-gods.
The Lord of the Rings: The Origins of the Valar
Even before the creation of the universe Ea, in which lies the world of Arda, Illúvatar created the Ainur. These helped him create Ea. After creation, 14 of the Ainur descended to Ea and became the Valar. However, one of them, Melkor, became a renegade and the epitome of evil.
After the Valar’s first homeland was destroyed, they settled in Valinor. The Immortal Lands, as Valinor is called, lay on the continent of Aman, which was separated from Middle-earth by the strait of Helcaraxe. Other Ainur followed, becoming the Maiar who served the Valar in Valinor.
The Lord of the Rings: The Friendship of the Valar with the Elves
Since Melkor ruled over Middle-earth, the Valar aided the Elves and brought them to Valinor. There they lived together, but when Melkor regained his strength, he sowed discord among the Elves. Many of them returned to Middle-earth and made war on each other and also on Melkor.
The people of Middle-earth joined the Elves and while the Valar largely stayed out of the fight against Melkor, evil was defeated. The Valar forgave the Elves for their bloodshed and lifted the Isle of Númenor out of the water as thanks.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fall of Numenor
The Men of Númenor grew envious of the Elves, who were granted immortal life in Valinor. Fueled by Sauron’s intrigues, Sauron himself being one of the Maiar, King Ar-Pharazon sailed against the Valar, intent on taking Valinor.
The Valar resigned their offices as guardians of Arda and enlisted the help of Illúvatar, who sank Númenor under the sea. Valinor then disappeared from the planet Arda and could only go through the straight way be reached.
The Lord of the Rings: The Valar in the Third Age
In the Third Age, in which the “Lord of the Rings” films are set, the Valar intervened only to a limited extent. So they sent the Istari, which include Gandalf and Saruman, to Middle-earth to assist in the fight against Sauron.
On September 2, 2022, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season 1 will start in the Amazon Prime Video news program. Whether we get to see the Valar remains to be seen. We will definitely be able to marvel at Valinor with the two trees!
