In episode 6 of “The Rings of Power” season 2, Elendil is accused of high treason. Because he refuses to recognize Ar-Pharazon as his king, he is to be punished with death. But then Pharazon’s henchman has another idea: the Valar should judge him. Elendil is to face the “Judgment of the Deep”, a seemingly ancient ritual in which a sea worm decides whether the accused person is guilty or not guilty.
The sea worm is lured with special horns and the accused is then thrown into a lagoon by the sea. The sea worm pulls the person under water and the accused is then either eaten or not. If they survive, it is proof that the Valar consider them innocent. At least according to the Amazon series. But is the “Judgment of the Deep” also in Tolkien’s legendarium? Or the sea worm?
The Judgement of the Deep is an invention of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”
The ritual from Númenor seems to be an invention of “The Rings of Power”. Nothing is written about a “judgment of the deep” in the works of JRR Tolkien. The sea worm also seems to be a creature that was developed for the Amazon series.
The only sea monster that Tolkien described in any detail was the Watcher in the Water that attacked Frodo and the Fellowship in front of the West Gate of Moria in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
However, the ritual surrounding the sea worm in Númenor is a very fitting approach to further the fight for the crown in the sea kingdom. The sea is very important to the inhabitants of Númenor, and the fact that Míriel survived the ritual after standing up for Elendil gives her much more support among the population. This means she could challenge Ar-Pharazon for the throne again.
It remains to be seen whether they will be able to do this in the last episodes of “The Rings of Power” Season 2. You will see the big season finale on October 3, 2024.
