In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power we see something extraordinary with Elrond and Durin IV: a friendship between Elves and Dwarves. How does this relationship play out over the course of the series and could Elrond even betray Durin?
A rare friendship across races: Elrond and Durin
There is a long and complicated relationship between the races of elves and dwarves. Both helped each other in times of need, but also waged bitter feuds against each other. In “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” the distrust and sometimes open enmity between them was a constant motive, which was overcome with Legolas and Gimli.
In “The Rings of Power” we see from Elrond and Durin IV that a long-lasting friendship between the two races was possible as early as the Second Age.
Even if Elrond, Durin IV is not on good terms at first due to the long absence of Elrond, the two quickly fraternize again. Elrond is the one who makes possible the alliance between the elves of Eregion under Celebrimbor and the dwarves of Khazad-dum under Durin’s father Durin III.
The result of this is the combined work of elven and dwarven crafters and builders on the Great Forge of Eregion. It is later to be of enormous importance. This period is also described in Tolkien’s books as the most harmonious and prosperous between the Elves and Dwarves. But how long can things go well? Finally, in the Third Age, we know that the two were open enemies at times.
A treasure as a test of friendship?
The rare find the dwarves are making in their mines in Khazad-dum is set to change everything. A rare, sparkling silver ore that is “lighter than a feather and stronger than dragon armor”, mithril is introduced in The Rings of Power.
As we will see in episode 4, dismantling it is extremely dangerous. When Elrond discovers the Ancient Mine with the veins of mythri, he has to swear to his friend Durin to keep the secret and not to tell anyone about it.
However, we know from the lore of Tolkien about the Second Age that at some point elves would also get hold of mithril and work with it and create incredible crafts. However, it is not known when and how this will happen. But one could assume that Elrond will have something to do with it.
We also know that one of the rings of power uncorrupted by Sauron and entrusted to great elven lords was made entirely of mithril. Galadriel was Nenya’s bearer, whose power enabled her to make her empire, Lothlórien, even stronger and more beautiful.
The creation of said ring by Celebrimbor could be a highlight of a future season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. But how the greatest Elven smith since Feanor got hold of the mithril for it, we may soon find out.
Does Elrond break friendship with Durin to help his own people?
One can only speculate as to the motives that would lead Elrond to break his promise to Durin. But it is certain that this is not good for their friendship and may even lead to a rift between elves and dwarves.
One possibility is that when Sauron wages war on Middle-earth, Celebrimbor will feel compelled to create a powerful weapon to rival Sauron (and the One Ring?). But for that he would need a powerful ore that can only be mithril. Whereupon Elrond, for the good of Middle-earth, reveals the secret of the dwarves and thus their friendship with Durin.
Another possibility is that Elrond will unravel the mysteries of mithril to stop the dwarves from digging deeper into the mountain and waking up the Balrog. But how the consequence for Elrond expresses itself, the “wrath of the dwarves against yours” conjured up by Durin would also have to be seen.
In any case, it would be a dramatic turn for both characters and the entire series that will shape the relationship between the elves and dwarves over the course of seasons and ages.
