The Lord of the Rings – The Rings of Power: Director predicts dark times for the second season and promises surprising twists

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” showed us a supposedly peaceful time in Middle-earth in 2022. Through Peter Jackson’s films, we actually know the continent as a dangerous place that was instilled with fear and terror by Sauron’s rule. The Amazon series will now plunge Middle-earth into darkness with the upcoming second season.

Director Charlotte Brändström (“The Continental”) promises in an interview with Jonatan Blomberg from “MovieZine“that the coming season will be darker and dirtier than the previous episodes. The series creator does not reveal any details about the plot of the new episodes, but she does tease some surprising changes.

What I know and what I can say with certainty is that it will be darker, edgier and more character driven. I still think we have some very interesting episodes ahead of us. I saw them all over Christmas, just the cuts. I think it will be a very good season. We tried to make it darker, a little dirtier I think. And not in the picture, but to make it as authentic as possible. We also have some very surprising twists in it.

What awaits us in the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”?

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth. The time is considered a time of peace and prosperity, but that changes over the course of the first season. Elf Galadriel discovers evidence that the dark Sauron is returning and will once again bring misfortune to the land.

At the end of the season, Halbrand, Galadriel’s savior and companion, reveals himself to be Sauron. He tries to get the elf to his side, but the young warrior declares war on Sauron. During a battle between Sauron’s orc army and the warriors of Númenor, the Southlands burst into flames and the dead land of Mordor emerges.

In the final episodes of Season 1, we got a foretaste of what Galadriel and the other inhabitants of Middle-earth will now face in Season 2. Sauron no longer fights covertly against the people of Middle-earth, but rather offensively. We know that he will forge the rings of power, darkening the hearts of men and turning the dwarves against each other. A time of war begins for Middle-earth.

When does the second season of “The Rings of Power” start?

Unfortunately, Charlotte Brändström did not reveal any details about the start of the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” in her interview. However, filming was already completed in 2023 and as we could hear, the editing work is apparently in its final stages.

We expect the new season of the series to come to Amazon Prime Video in fall 2024.
