Disguised as Annatar, Sauron (Charlie Vickers) roams the elven kingdom of Eregion in “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 and manipulates the elven smiths around Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards). They forge the Rings of Power under his guidance and have no idea that Sauron ultimately wants to use these rings to subjugate all of Middle Earth.

In the sixth episode, the supply of Mithril, which is used to forge the Rings, runs low and Celebrimbor sends Sauron/Annatar to Khazad-dum to negotiate. King Durin III (Peter Mullan) does not want to give up Mithril and so Sauron returns to Eregion empty-handed, right?

What may confuse many fans is that Sauron ends up with Mithril Ore, which he gives to Celebrimbor to complete the Rings of Power. Where did he get that from, seeing as how he wasn’t given anything in Khazad-dum.

Did Sauron find mithril somewhere else?

In a beautiful vial, Annatar gives Celebrimbor mithril powder, which he is to use to forge the rings. Narvi (Kevin Eldon) himself is said to have made it. It is clear at this point that Sauron is lying, as Narvi did not give him anything like that in Khazad-dum. But what is the truth behind this mithril ore?

Sauron could not possibly have gotten the mithril from anywhere else, as the valuable metal is only found in Khazad-dum. Therefore, it can be concluded that Sauron is deceiving Celebrimbor and is not giving him mithril at all, but something else that he has manipulated to look like mithril.

In episode 6, we can already see how Sauron changes Celebrimbor’s perception of the city. While the city is actually the scene of a siege, Sauron makes it look to Celebrimbor as if it is at peace. He will do something similar with the mithril.

If it’s not mithril, what does Sauron give Celebrimbor?

Of all the rings, we know that the 9 Rings of Men were the ones that Sauron corrupted the most. He had the most influence on these and so it can be assumed that the Mithril ore is actually something that Sauron uses to corrupt the rings. Sauron star Charlie Vickers has already given us a little taste in an exclusive interview:

Without giving away any spoilers, but I have more… – let me say, I bring even more of my personality into it! The corruption increases with each ring. And people are also the easiest to corrupt.

What exactly it is is unclear, but Lord Sauron definitely has his ways of corrupting the Rings of Power to use them for his sinister purposes.

Every Thursday a new episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 appears in Amazon Prime Video’s new releases program. Work is said to already be underway on Season 3 of the “Lord of the Rings” series, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
