In Episode 2 of the new season of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) travels to Mandalore and is captured, attacked and rescued from the depths of the ruined planet. His savior, Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), then takes him to the Liv ing Waters beneath the mines.
In the cave of the water, she tells him the legend of the mythosaur: “These mines have existed since the time of the first Mandalor. According to old folk belief, the mines were once a mythosaur cave. Mandalore the Great is said to have tamed the mythical beast. This legend also comes from the seal of the skull and became the symbol of our world.”
Din then wants to go into the waters to wash away his sins, but the waters are deep and the beskar is heavy, so Din flops into the water and lands at the bottom of the grotto. Bo-Katan chases after him with her jet pack and is able to bring him back to the water’s surface.
On the way up, the two swim past a giant creature: the Mythosaurier. This being is considered the heraldic animal of Mandalore and all Mandalorians, and is also seen as the sigil of the blacksmith (Emily Swallow). Mando also gifted Grogu a necklace with the mythosaur’s head on it.
Bo-Katan tells us most about the mythosaurs in the scene just before we see the beast. Mandalore the Great is said not only to have tamed the mythosaur, but also to have ridden it. It is referenced in the first season of The Mandalorian.
When Mando struggles to ride a blurrg, Kuiil (Nick Nolte) makes fun of him, saying that Mando’s ancestors even rode mythosaurs. Whether the appearance of the mythosaur can even be interpreted as an omen that we will see Mando riding the creature at the end of the season?
We’ll definitely find out more next week. A new episode is streamed on Disney+ every Wednesday. This year we can also look forward to more “Star Wars” new releases in the Disney+ New Releases program.
