Super Mario Run is Nintendo’s attempt at a mobile version of Mario’s classic 2D platformer, and is currently running a tie-in with Super Mario Bros. Miracle.
Thanks to Eurogamer, I was reminded that Super Mario Run is an existing and playable game, and weirdest of all, it’s currently running a Super Mario Bros. Marvel crossover. It’s not a particularly fancy or exciting game, as all it does is have you collect magical flowers, which turn all the Goombas on the screen into gold, which you can then collect like coins. Defeating (absorbing?) Goombas will then fill up a Stamp Card, which you can then use to unlock buildings and items to decorate. Like I said, not particularly exciting, but hey, might that be a reason to go back to a game from seven years ago that didn’t have that much to do in the first place?
Super Mario Run first launched in 2016 as a free-to-play game with several levels, with the option to pay for the full game. While the number of downloads is indeed large (300 million as of 2018), the premium level is quite expensive compared to other mobile games, and the number of downloads is not high. This feels like a sign that Nintendo doesn’t really understand the mobile market, and they’ve clearly started to move away from it in recent years, which makes this Wonder tie-in a bit surprising.
Super Mario Bros. Miracle launched in October and delivered an incredibly powerful 2D Mario experience. In fact, Alex gave it top marks in his review, saying: “Within the parameters of what 2D Mario can understand, this has to be the best game since Super Mario World – and was the perfect first game to usher in a new era of Mario games with his newfound status as a movie star.”
