Netflix took some risks with the production of 3 Body Problem. There is a lot at stake, the mega-production costs the streaming giant around $200 million.
In addition, the showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss are certainly not unknown: The makers of Game of Thrones have created the most successful series in recent years, but have not been able to make friends with many fans with the last few seasons.
Now, according to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the duo has postponed the series’ launch by a full year, to squeeze in a single scene.

A year for five minutes
The reason for this enormous delay was the major strike in Hollywood, which brought all productions to a standstill for several months. US actors have campaigned for fairer wages and better working conditions. 3 Body Problem would actually not have been affected by this, all scenes had already been in the can since September 2022. But then another idea came:
We wrote the scene the day before the strike. It was literally five pages, but we really thought it was worth doing. Netflix was understanding. It would have been very easy for them to say: You have a finished series that’s ready to air and we should hold it back [für eine Szene, die] Two people in a bar for five minutes shows …
If released at the beginning of 2023, 3 Body Problem would have appeared at the same time as its Chinese counterpart Three-Body, which tells the same story in 30 episodes – eight episodes are waiting for you in the US version.
What is 3 Body Problem about?
The series is based on the Trisolaris novel trilogy, in which a group of scientists in the 1960s send signals into space to contact alien life forms. However, this ultimately leads to Earth becoming the target of a possible invasion.
If Netflix wants to implement the entire Trisolaris book trilogy with 3 Body Problem, it will need four seasons, according to Benioff and Weiss – but whether they will come depends on the success of the first season. On March 21, 2024 3 Body problem starts with the streaming service.
