The Minions have become the favorite characters of many people, from children to adults. They are great, adorable, funny, absurd, exaggerated, they have their own language (which we have all imitated at some point) and they live with a single purpose: to serve the most evil villain. His usual master is Gru.
Their nature as servants of evil generated many theories on the internet since their creation. There has been much speculation about which fictional and real villains would be ideal for the Minions. Personally, I think they would fit in very well with Marvel’s Thanos. Although not all debates have chosen the path of humor, some preferred to go down very dark and murky paths.
More than a few people proposed that the Minions had to serve Hitler at some point between 1930 and 1945, the years in which he rose to power and the Second World War took place… and all the horrible events that accompanied it. The Minions thing stopped being funny and its creators took it so seriously that they dedicated a part of the 2015 Minions movie to explaining what happened during that time.
The film destroyed the internet meme. It showed the Minions serving Tyrannosaurus Rex, cavemen in prehistory, Pharaoh Khufu, Count Dracula and Napoleon Bonaparte… and that’s where they cut it off. It turns out that they were lost in a frozen cave from 1815 (approximately, Bonaparte’s fall in the Battle of Waterloo) until 1968, when they appeared in New York after sending an expedition of three minions. All of this happens during the movie.
In short, the lovable Minions did not participate in the World Wars… at least as far as current canon material indicates. Taking into account the multiverse fever that we are experiencing thanks to Marvel and DC, I wouldn’t be surprised to find an official story that shows some rebel faction serving shady villains in history.
