Nintendo Switch games will be able to accommodate a feature that’s as controversial as it’s hated on PC. Here’s what you can take away from this announcement.
To say Denuvo DRM is highly controversial would be an understatement. The anti-hacking system much hated by many PC gamers will now make its home on Nintendo Switch.
Le Denuvo DRM is coming to Nintendo Switch
It’s official, Denuvo DRM is attacking Nintendo Switch games. Irdeto, the company that publishes the anti-piracy solution, has announced that it will appear on Big N’s hybrid console. Nintendo consoles have long suffered from piracy issues, and the Switch is no exception. Even if a game is protected in its PC version, the game released on Switch can be emulated once it’s released and played on PC. This bypasses the strong protection mechanisms of the PC version
The problem is that the emulation is not banned as long as the user has legally purchased the base game. Many mud doors etc streamers actually use the emulation of titles released on Nintendo Switch for their activities. However, what further puts off the community is Denuvo DRM’s reputation. This protection solution has actually had a negative impact on the performance of certain games, with bugs and sometimes even crashes. This was the case, for example, with Tomb Raider titles or Resident Evil, which worked better when the mechanism was removed.
Still, as always, the company promises that its DRM will not affect the performance of Nintendo Switch games. Small glimmer of hope, Irdeto has not announced an official partnership with Big N. So, it’s up to the third-party providers to decide whether or not to go with Denuvo. Nothing seems to be planned by Nintendo.
