The selection of foldable smartphones is not exactly diverse here in Europey. The smartphone manufacturer Samsung makes it very comfortable in Europey with its latest offshoots, the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, with little competition. Away from the South Korean manufacturer, it’s going to be tough. One of the major difficulties that have been discussed earlier in this article:

In the Asian market, the variety looks far better. Oppo recently unveiled its new foldable phone, the Oppo Find N2. So far, however, the release is only planned for China. Find out what makes the smartphone so special below.

As already described, the Find N2 is a foldable offshoot of the 2nd generation. Due to the construction, it competes with the Z Fold 4 from Samsung.
Visually, however, it shares only a few similarities with its opponent. This is mainly due to the form factor, both when opening and when folding. At 5.5 inches, the external display is almost as small as the iPhone 12 Mini or 13 Mini, or the Google Pixel 4a.
The larger interior display is a bit more expansive at 7.1 inches. Both screens have a refresh rate of 120 Hertz, the inside is even based on LTPO technology and dynamically throttles the frame rate down to 1 Hertz.
Apart from the form factor, what makes the foldable smartphone unique? With a weight of around 233 grams, it is one of the lightest foldables ever. For comparison: the Z Fold 4 from Samsung weighs 263 grams. An iPhone 14 Pro Max weighs 240 grams. Part of the lower weight is probably due to the device’s smaller form factor.
The probably even more important positive feature: The crease in the middle of the screen when you open the phone. According to XDA’s website the kink should be neither visible nor noticeable.
A circumstance that other manufacturers have to struggle with and which is still a disruptive factor for potential buyers today. In return, the Fold 4 boasts IPX8 water resistance. A feature that is sorely lacking in many phones of this type.
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, currently the best SoC for Android devices, provides plenty of computing power. The chip will be replaced next spring by its successor, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2. Xiaomi’s 13 series will be one of the first to have this processor installed.
Good news for all Samsung enthusiasts: The S23 series should also be able to enjoy the powerful chip in 2023. The South Korean manufacturer is doing without the in-house Exynos processor for the first time in this country – at least in the S series.
Hope for the Galaxy S23
Are the years of stagnation over?
The battery of the Find N2 has a capacity of 4,520 mAh and the smartphone can be supplied with power again at a speed of 67 watts. However, you have to do without wireless charging with the Oppo foldable.
What operating system is preinstalled? By default, Android 13 runs with Color OS 13 on the smartphone. The system is supported by 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage.
For the cameras, Oppo relies on a triple setup on the back of the cell phone. The main camera has a resolution of 50 megapixels with an aperture of f/1.8. Typically, there is a sensor for ultra-wide-angle shots with a resolution of 48 megapixels (f/2.2). The 2x tea zoom camera has 32 megapixels (f2.0).
The manufacturer installs a selfie camera with 32 megapixels on each of the two displays. In cooperation with the Swiss camera manufacturer Hasselblad, the camera lenses are supported on the software side and should therefore benefit from better color calibration and 10-bit RAW support.
We hope to be able to present the recordings to you in a detailed review. But as indicated in the introduction, it remains to be seen whether the smartphone will even come to Europe.
It is offered with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage for the equivalent of 1,215 dollars. The smartphone is offered for around 100 dollars more via various import sites. In terms of price, the Find N2 is therefore significantly lower than the Fold 4 with an RRP of 1,800 dollars. The street price of the Samsung foldable is now clearly lower.
Why might the Oppo Find N2 not come to Europey?
The release of the flagship is currently only planned for the Chinese market. Whether and when the device will come to Europey at all is more than questionable.
According to a ruling by the Munich district court, Oppo infringes two Nokia patents regarding the 4G and 5G modules and a sales and marketing ban was issued. The manufacturer of the Find N2 is not willing to cede the required sum to Nokia for the two licenses.
Author’s Opinion: A release of the Oppo Find N2 could be a game changer in this country if the price is right. So far, the line-up of these smartphones is far too small and the prices are still exorbitant. The foldable from the Chinese manufacturer will not undercut the 1,000 euro mark, but it will at least declare war on the competitor Samsung. While the Fold 4 is an overall powerful and versatile gadget, the changes are fewer than its predecessor. And as the saying goes: competition stimulates business.
Speaking of hope: there may be a significant improvement for spectacle wearers in the future. You can find out what the new glasses are all about in the following article:
