At the end of 2022, the Mistlands, a major update for Valheim, was released that extensively revised and expanded the eponymous biome. Now the developers are announcing their next goal: The Ashlands in the south are to be given a general overhaul next. There are also other small announcements in the new blog post, which we summarize here.

Valheim
The big Mistlands update is now completely out!
This is what the Ashlands should look like
Currently you can already find the Ashlands in the game, they are a lifeless wasteland where the air is full of ash. All you can find there is a surtling and some glowing metal.
Like other areas before, the biome should be completely revised and filled with life, at least in a figurative sense: the developers will present the Ashlands as a future land of the dead
before, in which undead creatures up to mischief. The area is also characterized by its volcanic activity. However, there is no planned release date for the update yet.
The developers have already revealed some details about the new content and the course of development in their blog post:
- The biome will be very different: In contrast to other areas, you will not find the Ashlands as islands distributed across the map, but as a large piece of land in the south.
- The development should be transparent: During the development of the Mistlands, the developers revealed little about progress and content, but that is about to change. Players should be informed comprehensively about the conception of the Ashlands. We get to see early concepts that may not all make it into the game, but this should give us a better understanding of how far along development is.
While we wait for the Ashlands, some minor updates will also be released, but they shouldn’t delay the Ashlands’ release:
- Hildir’s Quest: This small content update brings us new clothes for our characters, an NPC named Hildir and the possibility to restyle our hair.
- Xbox-Release: Valheim will be released for Xbox in spring 2023 and will then enable crossplay between console and PC.
- New difficulty settings: The developers are also working on adding new settings that make Valheim harder or easier.
- Accessibility: Last but not least, they want to ensure that players with disabilities can also try Valheim.

Valheim: Mini-Cartoon gets you in the mood for the Mistlands expansion
Valheim delighted an overwhelming majority of its players, but its updates – including Mistlands – were never able to repeat the success at launch. Although the game has a solid base of active players, Valheim-enthusiastic Géraldine also worries in her column about the future of the survival hit.
What do you think of the plans for Ashlands? Are you looking forward to the next biome, would you have preferred something else, or are the updates for Valheim just taking too long? Write your opinion in the comments!
