Among the numerous events aimed at recognizing the best games every year, the Game Awards organized by Geoff Keighley are among the most followed events. The man also behind Summer Game Fest, the de facto replacement for the defunct E3, actually has some influence over the video game industry. In addition to celebrating “ best creative and technical work » of the year in video games, the ceremony is also the venue for the well-known WORLD PREMIERE, which offers us a preview of future major releases.
Everything will be broadcast live on the event’s various official channels from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on December 13th from 1:30 a.m. (Paris time). Until then, we had an appointment this evening to determine the nominees for the numerous categories of this edition of the Game Awards 2024, including, of course, Game of the Year.
A busy year for video games, both good and bad
After a 2023 edition where Baldur’s Gate 3 won absolutely everything, there is no shortage of great candidates at the 2024 Game Awards. As a reminder, the nominees for the various categories are selected by a jury made up of players from the industry and the specialist media sector, which includes iGamesNews. The editorial team has thus made its contribution to this huge building. Some of our foals also appear to have received praise from other organizations and personalities alike, as you can see below. However, the community finally has its own category: “Players’ Voice” in three voting sessions until December 13th.
In any case, we note that Astro Bot, Shadow of the World Tree, the Elden Ring DLC and Metaphor RefantaZio, the three highest-rated titles of the year, particularly enjoy some influence. Something that also caused controversy in the second case. The Game Awards 2024 is actually setting a precedent for its tenth edition, having updated its selection criteria to include expansion packs and additional and seasonal content in the nominees, in addition to remakes/remasters. A choice that can rightly be debated, despite the level of excellence that FromSoftware offers once again, having won the Game of the Year title twice with Sekiro in 2018 and Elden Ring in 2022. Speaking of remakes: We see Silent Hill 2 and FF7 Rebirth is also particularly noteworthy. We’re finally noticing underdogs that we didn’t expect to get so many nominations, like Black Myth Wukong, Star Wars Outlaws or even Balatro.
In addition to this year’s major releases highlighted here by The Game Awards 2024, this year has unfortunately also been synonymous with the continuation of the carnage that the industry is suffering in the wake of the post-COVID frenzy. We have therefore once again deplored numerous mass layoffs and studio closures, some regrettable, others predictable (such as the historic Concord crash). Let’s hope that 2025 will be a less gloomy year in this area, but unfortunately there is room for doubt. Let’s also keep our fingers crossed that the winners of the 2024 Game Awards have a little more time to express themselves this year.
