The new Chromium-based Edge browser has been officially available for download since mid-January 2020. However, Microsoft has only just started to automatically deliver the software to all Windows users via update.
The Redmond company provides information at the own support website detailed about the update process. The update with the version number KB4541302 accordingly automatically replaces the old Edge browser based on EdgeHTML with the new browser based on Chromium.
Automatic update for Windows 10
After the update, all entries in the start menu and shortcuts also appear automatically with the new Edge logo and start the updated browser version directly. Microsoft delivers the automatic update to all users of Windows 10 with versions 1903 and 1909, whereby users with version 1903 must also install the update KB4517389.
Users of other versions of Windows, including Windows 8.1, Windows 7 and MacOS, as well as mobile devices can download the browser manually from the official Microsoft website. You can read in detail how the installation process works in our news about the release of the Edge browser.
The browser fight is on
In any case, the automatic update of the browser under Windows 10 represents the final step of the edge rollout process. With this, Microsoft is finally saying goodbye to the old EdgeHTML and trying to gain a foothold in the browser market again with the help of Chromium.
