The Thing video game adaptation is ambitious but flawed, so Nightdive hopes to help it achieve what it could have been.

John Carpenter’s The Thing originally released in 1982, but 20 years later, Computer Artworks chose to make a sequel to the classic film in the form of a video game. At the time, the game sold well, and while reviews were generally good, it wasn’t perfect, but the concept of any teammate having the potential to turn into the titular Thing was pretty cool. Earlier this month, Nightdive Studios announced that it would be remaking The Thing, and in a recent interview with GamesRadar, the developer talked about what to expect from the game.

“[Computer Artworks was] “They were really, really happy with the game they made, and rightfully so, but they also realized the limitations, realized there were things they couldn’t do because the technology, the game engine didn’t support it,” explained business development director Larry Kuperman. “And, without getting into too much detail and without giving away any details, there were things we were able to do that the developers had originally envisioned. That was really important to us.”

Kuperman didn’t explain what exactly those things are, but did say the game will “play the way you remember the original game, but it doesn’t.” It was apparently important to Kuperman and Nightidve that the spirit of the original game be preserved in the remake, which led them to hire several of the original developers from Computer Artworks (now defunct).

There is currently no release date for The Thing remake, but it is expected to be released sometime in 2024 and will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
