The
European game rating agency PEGI will begin to provide information on whether the title contains loot boxes.
Peggy Indicates that information will begin to be added to the game box to indicate whether the title involved contains items purchased in the game, such as loot boxes or card packs.
This information will be included in the physical packaging and digital storefronts in the form of a notice, stating "including the random item paid".
The following are the random items paid by PEGI:
Paid random items are a special form of optional in-game purchases: they contain all in-game offers to buy digital products or giveaways, and players do not know exactly what they will get before buying (eg loot boxes, card packs, Prize wheel). Depending on the game, these items may be purely decorative or may have functional value: they can include other characters, clothing and other appearance upgrades, and they can also include tools or weapons. They can unlock additional levels, add new skills or provide performance upgrades. For the purpose of this descriptor, "paid" random items refer to items that can be purchased directly in real currency and / or items that can be exchanged for in-game virtual currency that can be purchased directly in real currency.
If the game does not contain a loot box, but contains an offer for in-game purchases, the game box will only display the "in-game purchase" descriptor.
Earlier this week, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) announced that it would begin adding a "include random item" description to its US ratings.
