Since its release in 2022, Overwatch 2 has been the subject of controversy. The latest involves character skins from a collaboration with a famous anime… which cost more in total than the series’ Blu-Ray box.

While Overwatch, the first of its kind, won Game of the Year in 2016, we can’t say that its successor benefits from the popularity. Between the issues related to balancing, the progression of its Battle Pass and others, We can’t say that players are really happy with Overwatch 2, as evidenced by the “extremely negative” overall rating on Steam.. Unfortunately, given the recent controversies, things don’t seem poised for improvement just yet.

Overwatch 2 marks the beginning of collaborations

One of the differences of Overwatch 2 compared to the original game, is that it offers skins, i.e. appearances for the characters, in collaboration with other pop culture licenses. Previously we remember that Blizzard’s shooter was entitled to outfits from One Punch Man, Diablo IV or even the K-pop group Le Sserafim. So there aren’t too many surprisesWe saw a collaboration with Cowboy Bebop Land, because even though the anime is current, it remains as popular as ever. However, from there to acquiring it in Overwatch 2 is a long step, especially given the price…

Higher prices than the collector’s box

At the moment, The Cowboy Bebop-inspired skins will be sold individually for 2,500 Overwatch Coins, which is equivalent to 25 dollars, 21 pounds and a similar amount in dollars. A total of four different outfits are offered: Ashe as Faye Valentine, Cassidy as Spike Spiegel, Sombra as Ed and Mauga as Jet Black. In other words, To get everything back, the amount is around a hundred dollars… and is therefore more expensive than the complete collector’s edition of the series on Blu-Ray, which costs around 50 dollars, if it is not on offer. It was enough for Overwatch 2 to once again draw the ire of players, both from its own community and from Cowboy Bebop fans who don’t like to see their series treated in this way. As one Internet user on the social network X (formerly Twitter) said: Don’t be blinded by nostalgia.
