The PS5 recently received a new port of an old Xbox exclusive. But unlike Hi-Fi Rush, it’s a disappointment in some technical respects.
Microsoft has started porting Xbox exclusive games like Hi-Fi Rush or Sea of Thieves to PS5, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. And so far everything has been going well as the portages have been pretty neat. The piracy game is even better finished than on Xbox Series X|S, with a version closer to that on PC. But one bad student is disrupting these promising beginnings for Xbox exclusives on PlayStation 5.
Grounded disappoints on PS5
After Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment, Microsoft ported Grounded to PS5. If you’re not familiar with this title, it’s a survival game in the style of Mom, I Shrunk the Kids where you play as a young character in XXL environments. A software designed to evolve over time and which has therefore just landed on the PlayStation 5. A must? At the moment, that’s not really the case, according to analysis published by Digital Foundry. For them, the PS5 version of Grounded suffers from pretty incomprehensible performance issues.
Chain Digital foundry explains that the dynamic resolution of Grounded on PS5 is lower than that on Xbox Series And this is all the more surprising since the frame rate is not stable. At 50 fps there are regular drops, while on the Xbox Series X the 60 fps lasts longer. The launch is very disappointing at this level because not only is the quality worse, but it also runs less well (between 45 and 60 fps). Additionally, aliasing is more noticeable on the PS5 as there is more flickering and noise.
If we look at other points, the PS5 is better at handling higher quality shadows and more details. The problem is that this version of Grounded should at least be equivalent since the consoles’ performance is similar. And Sea of Thieves or Hi-Fi Rush have shown the way for successful ports.
