“The Pot-au-Feu” (“La Passion de Dodin Bouffant”) competes for the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2023. The film is about chef Dodin Bouffant and with warm images we get over two hours of food porn!
At the Cannes Film Festival 2023, the film “The Pot-au-Feu” (original title: “La Passion de Dodin Bouffant”) competes in the main competition for the Palme d’Or. The French film also boasts an international star in Juliette Binoche, while Benoit Magimel is very famous in France.
The film by director Tran Anh Hung is quite long with a running time of almost 2.5 hours. In addition, it is not told very quickly, which also makes the running time of “The Pot-au-Feu” noticeable. Boredom doesn’t necessarily set in, but the film takes so much time that you can also happily wander off in your thoughts.
The trick is that the digression somehow fits the film. In beautiful, warm and sunny pictures we get a food porn where it is actually not so important that you are always mentally involved. It almost seems as if you should lose yourself in the pictures and go on your own journey of thought.
The images are so beautiful and the stars are bathed in a soft light that it is very comfortable to look at the screen. Every camera angle looks like a work of art. While such films with little action in the stream often lead to looking at the cell phone, “La Passion de Dodin Bouffant” can only really unfold in the cinema.
Especially in the last act, the plot then picks up more and more speed and above all Magimel Benoit, who is also represented several times in Cannes this year with the film “Omar la Fraise”, proves what a multi-faceted actor he is. As chef Dodin Bouffant, he embodies passion, cordiality and melancholy.
Juliette Binoche, on the other hand, embodies joie de vivre and warmth in her role as Eugénie, Dodin’s cook, and thus perfectly complements Magimel. The two dominate the screen together and interrupt the food porn with good dialogue inserts.
Set in the late 19th century, it is about the love story of Dodin and his fellow cook/girlfriend Eugénie. In addition, the film tells about the life of the chef and his passion for cooking. The film is based on the novel “La Vie et la passion de Dodin-Bouffant gourmet” by Marcel Rouff.
By the way, if you are hungry, you should not watch the film. Almost half of “The Pot-au-Feu” only shows scenes in which people cook or talk about food, after all it is a love story and, as is well known, love goes through the stomach!
2.5 hours of food porn in warm and beautiful pictures!
“The Pot-au-Feu” is too long. At just under 2.5 hours, the film isn’t able to captivate, but it doesn’t want to be either. Instead, he gives us time to get lost in the beautiful images and get hungry from all the food porn. What’s more, Benoit Magimel and Juliette Binoche act so well that we forgive the film’s lengths.
