By Zeus! Well then, yes! Age of Mythology, like Age of Empires before it, will be completely overhauled. Microsoft will soon release a remake of the popular strategy classic under the name Age of Mythology Retold. The fans have been waiting patiently for this announcement for a long time, now it’s finally official.
The remake was announced as part of the Age of Empires 25th anniversary celebrations. And yes, you are probably now wringing your hands to ask what that looks like. Unfortunately, there was no gameplay to see yet, but an impressive announcement trailer:

Age of Mythology Retold: First teaser finally announces the remake
Here’s how Age of Mythology gets a makeover
Many details are not yet known about Age of Mythology Retold. However, we expect a similar revision as with the Definitive Editions of Age of Empires. So you can expect a much nicer look and there will certainly be some new, modern features that will make the RTS easier to use. Whether new factions or campaigns are planned was completely concealed.
Release: When is this coming out?
A release date has not yet been revealed, the game seems to be still deep in development. At least it can be expected that it will end up directly in the Game Pass when it is released.
That’s what makes Age of Mythology special
While Age of Empires puts a lot of emphasis on historical accuracy, Age of Mythology turns pretty wild. It is true that this is also a largely historical scenario, more precisely in antiquity, but this is a version interspersed with mythological effects. In addition to spearmen, archers and catapults, you can also fall back on legendary figures such as minotaurs or conjure up magical effects with the help of the gods.
Age of Mythology is basically based on the same gameplay as Age of Empires, but adapts the formula in a few places. You can only build city centers at predetermined locations and instead of mining stones, each people has to generate the favor of the gods in their own way. Overall there are fewer factions. There were three in the base game, but since the remake comes with the expansions, five are available here.
Each race can choose from one of three gods at the start of the game:
- Greeks choose from Zeus, Hades or Poseidon
- Egyptians choose from Ra, Isis or Set
- Vikings choose from Thor, Odin or Loki
- Atlanteans choose from Kronos, Oranos or Gaia
- Chinese choose from Fu Xi, Nü Wa or Shennong
Unlock even more gods and their unique benefits as you advance through the four ages. Unlike Age of Empires, Age of Mythology’s campaign tells a coherent story. Altogether there is a big campaign, a small campaign as well as two slightly shorter campaigns that were released with the expansions.
