Episode 3 of Star Wars, The revenge of the SithIt was a bitter moment for many Star Wars fans. We all saw how Anakin sank little by little on the dark side, driven by his feelings and attracted by Palpatine or Lord Sidious. Also the bitterness of their closest beings, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé Amidala. But he left a very important one in the background.
R2D2 had a seat in the front row during Anakin's descent to the dark side. The astromechanical was a faithful friend and protector for many years. He risked life on many occasions and followed his orders (almost) to the letter for years. And yet, Anakin separated him from his side without giving him an explanation. The film shows this passed, but Mattew Stover's book tells the distress of the droid.
When Anakin returns to Padmé to tell him the “attempt of Jedi Rebellion” and the death of Mace Windu, C3PO asks R2D2 what the hell is happening and the latter answers: “I don't know. Anakin doesn't talk to me anymore.” Both discuss the guilt of those present in the crime scene. “The factors do not fit,” says the confusing astromechanical, since he did not understand the conflict between the dark side and the bright side.
He could not be completely sure that the disagreement of humans would concern him in something, but one thing had been clear: “It's wrong, Anakin … needs medical attention.” – About R2D2 during the confrontation between Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi
He remained with Anakin when he went to Mustafar as Darth Vader to end the separatists. It is said that the last order he received from his friend before leaving him was “stay with the ship” (that's why he always breached her onwards), but the truth is that he saw him again: when he almost kill Padmé and faces Obi-Wan Kenobi. It was then that he understood that something was wrong with his friend. The book recounts how R2D2 and C3PO gave first aid to Padmé while the epic battle took place. And was present during the birth of Luke and Leia. Does not articulate word again in the remaining book.
