The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1 finale is finally here. And hidden within, albeit surely coincidental, is a scene that chillingly resembles a pivotal moment in House of the Dragon.
Tar-Palantir, king of Númenor and father of Queen Regent Míriel, is dying. So Pharazon instructs the students of the master builders’ guild to draw up sketches of the king for the later king’s tomb. Everyone gets an hour with the ruler. When it is Earien’s turn to draw the ruler’s face, Palantir suddenly wakes up.
He mistakes Earien for his daughter Míriel shortly before his death and tells her of the prophecy that predicts the downfall of Númenor unless they return to their Elvish ways. He even shows her the palantír, the stone that allows him to see into the future.
Anyone who has already seen the 8th episode of “House of the Dragon” should notice that the scene bears a really striking resemblance to King Viserys’ death scene. The dying king mistakes his wife Alicent Hightower for his daughter and heiress Rhaenyra Targaryen.
He, too, speaks of a prophecy, the Song of Ice and Fire, which provides a way out of Westeros’ downfall: a Targaryen must always sit on the throne.
In the case of House of the Dragon, we already know that this mix-up is devastating. It triggers an inheritance war, the dance of the dragons. “The Lord of the Rings” fans already know that the fall of Númenor is imminent. But how Earien, who appears exclusively in the Amazon series “The Rings of Power”, reacts to this information will only be seen in Season 2.
However, there are already some fan theories about Earien joining Pharazon and turning to evil. You can read what is known about season 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” in our season overview.
