- However, how does Sauron become the Dark Eye from The Lord of the Rings movies?
The final episode of The Rings of Power showed us Halbrand’s true nature. Galadriel confronts the supposed human king and reveals his true identity as Sauron. Although he does not see himself as Morgoth’s successor, he still strives for world domination.
For film fans, however, he still seems to look significantly different. Over the course of the series, how does Sauron evolve into an armored beast and eventually a lidless Dark Eye towering over Mordor?
A master of many forms
Originally, before the first age, Sauron was a Maia, called Mairon. As a spirit, he possessed extraordinary powers and was intended to serve the Valar gods. Taught by Aule, the Vala of crafting and blacksmithing, however, Sauron was soon corrupted by the Dark Enemy and corrupted Vala Morgoth.
As supreme commander of Morgoth, Sauron brought war to the elven kingdoms of Beleriand. During this time he ruled over numerous orcs and trolls from his own fortress on the island of the werewolves Tol Sirion. He used his magical and shapeshifting abilities to transform into both a giant wolf and a vampire-like bat. Since that time, Sauron has also been known as “the Shapeshifter”.
The double-tongued gift bringer
After the fall of Morgoth, Sauron fled. However, in the Second Age, when all saw each other in peacetime, he returned and chose a new form for himself. As Annatar the Gift-Bringer, he revealed himself to the Elves. As we see in The Rings of Power, he hid his true identity and tricked them into forging the Rings of Power.
However, secretly in his dominion in Mordor, he forged the One Ring in secret to enslave all others. He then waged devastating wars against the Elves and Eregion and Men of Númenor.
In captivity he even rose to become the highest advisor to the reigning Númenor king Ar-Pharazon. With lies and manipulation, he corrupted the king and the entire human nation, leading to their downfall.
A dark machine of destruction
Only the Last Alliance between Elves and Men (and Dwarves) could face Sauron together. On the slopes of Mount Doom, Elrond, Gil-Galad, and Elendil faced off against the Master of the Dark Land, who appeared in a heavily armored, black, monstrous form. Isildur finally succeeded in using Narsil, his father’s blade, to cut the One Ring from Sauron’s finger, ending the war.
This sealed Sauron’s downfall, who poured so much of his life and power essence into the ring that he could not survive without it. He disappeared from Middle-earth and lost all physical form.
Bodiless Return as The Eye of Sauron
For a thousand years Sauron was no more to be seen in Middle-earth. There were only remnants of his reign and whispers of his return. First he showed himself again in his old fortress of Dol Guldur in Mirkwood as a necromancer.
Failing in his attempt to destroy the elves and dwarves of Rhovanion, he fled back to Mordor. It was here that it finally took on its most prominent form and also its last. The dark, fiery red Eye of Sauron loomed over the rebuilt fortress of Barad-Dur.
As an Eye, however, Sauron could not directly intervene in a physical form and walk on Middle-earth. At least not until he finds the One Ring again. However, he is so much better at surveying the land, his allies and enemies, and is a constant presence for all who walk in Mordor and its borders.
His shadow hung over Middle-earth again and even in a disembodied form posed a great threat to all peoples. When Frodo and Sam manage to throw the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom, it spells Sauron’s downfall.
All its dark influence disappears and the eye implodes in a massive shockwave. His fifth defeat is final. Now he can never take any form in Middle-earth and returns to the Void. For some of his remaining followers, however, the Eye of Sauron will remain an iconic, cultic symbol for their master.
We will definitely see Sauron again in Season 2 of The Rings of Mach. The only question is: in what form?
