The new Amazon Prime series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” takes us into the dark times of the Second Age. This is where the bloody rise of the Dark Lord Sauron begins. The focus is on Galadriel, who has been fighting evil since the First Age and was one of the few who was able to see through Sauron’s plans.

While Cate Blanchett played Galadriel in the iconic films, Morfydd Clark brings a new, youthful and combative side of the mighty elf to the screens in the Amazon series.

1. Galadriel is one of the oldest and wisest elves in Middle Earth

Born in the First Age in Valinor, the sacred home of the Elves, Galadriel is one of the few who has seen the Telperion Tree of Light with her own eyes. She is one of the last survivors of the original Elves who walked Middle Earth. So how old is Galadriel in the Rings of Power series and in the Lord of the Rings trilogy?

In plain language: In the series “The Rings of Power” the elf between 3,900 and 4,169 years old a fairly young age for elves. At the end of the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, Galadriel leaves 8,374 years together with Gandalf, Elrond, Frodo and Bilbo, in Middle Earth. The elf Cirdan is even older than them and is one of the oldest elves in Middle Earth.

She was an elf of royal descent from both the Noldor and the Teleri, as she was the granddaughter of King Finwë and King Olwë. Through her grandmother Indis she was also closely related to King Ingwë of the Vanyar. This descent gave her extraordinary power and wisdom.

Her parents were Finarfin, Prince of the Ñoldor, and Eärwen. Her mother’s cousin was the famous Lúthien. Galadriel had four older brothers: Finrod Felagund, Orodreth, Angrod and Aegnor.

Galadriel has numerous magical abilities and is considered one of the most powerful elves in Middle Earth. The elf can communicate over great distances, predict the future and hide her mind from powerful beings. This meant that Sauron was unable to see the elf’s face. Even though Galadriel had incredible strength, she only used it for good.

Galadriel wore one of the three Elven rings, Nenya. This ring enhanced her power, particularly her ability to protect Lothlórien from evil and transform it into a place of timeless beauty.

5. Galadriel saw through Sauron’s deception

While many Elves, such as Celebrimbor, trusted Sauron in his disguise as Annatar, Galadriel was suspicious and recognized his true nature, making her one of the few who opposed his plans from the beginning.

Galadriel is the mother-in-law of Elrond. Her daughter, Celebrían, married Elrond, the ruler of Rivendell.

During one journey, Celebrían was attacked by Orcs and seriously injured. Although she was physically healed, the emotional wounds and pain of the attacks contributed to her finding her time in Middle Earth too painful. Eventually, she left her family and moved to the realm of the Undying Lands, Valinor.

7. Galadriel is Arwen’s grandmother

Galadriel is the grandmother of Arwen, who married Aragorn, King of Gondor, in The Lord of the Rings. In the world of Middle Earth, elves are generally immortal and live in the Undying Lands (Valinor). Arwen, on the other hand, chose to live a mortal life with Aragorn and thus give up her immortality.

Since her youth, Galadriel had the special gift of being able to look into the hearts of Men, Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits. There she saw the most secret desires, intentions or thoughts of which the person themselves had not yet become aware.

Faenor was the High King of the Noldor and creator of the Silmaril. When Melkor tried to get his hands on the gems, he sowed discord between the Noldor and the Valar. Faenor then incited the Noldor to revolt against the Valar, which Galadriel also joined. She and all the rebels were then banished from Aman and thus from Valinor.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Galadriel received Gil-galad’s blessing to return to Valinor. But it was only after Sauron’s final fall and the destruction of the One Ring that Galadriel went to Valinor and left Middle Earth.

Streaming service Amazon Prime Video is showing “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” in its program. The second season of “The Rings of Power” revolves around the rise of Sauron with a focus on the creation of the Rings of Power. He strives to lead Middle Earth into a dark future. The peoples of Middle Earth must face new threats and forge alliances that will have a decisive influence on the fate of the world in the Second Age.
