Who is the titular “Lord of the Rings”? Fans of the books and films will of course immediately say: Of course, Sauron. After all, the Dark Lord was the one who arranged for the forging of the twenty Rings of Power – including the One Ring.
But episode 2 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season 2 shows us that this title was actually promised to someone else. By Sauron himself. After forging the three elven rings, Halbrand returns to Eregion to persuade the elven smith Celebrimbor to forge more rings of power. Celebrimbor does not know at this point that Halbrand is actually Sauron, so it is easy for Sauron to show himself to Celebrimbor in his “true” form.
Celebration, der Herr der Ringe
He tells the smith that he is an emissary of the Valar who has been looking for someone with enough talent to save the peoples of Middle Earth with the help of the Rings of Power. He promises Celebrimbor that with his help he will finally be able to step out of the shadow of his grandfather Fëanor and from now on be known as “The Lord of the Rings”.
All these promises and Sauron’s new form of Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, tempt Celebrimbor to actually forge more Rings of Power. And even though Celebrimbor is ultimately the creator of most of the rings, it is Sauron who ultimately goes down in Middle Earth history as “The Lord of the Rings” through the creation of the One Ring.
Celebrimbor was blinded by Sauron, who took advantage of the Elven smith’s weakness. Celebrimbor had waited his whole life to create something great through his craftsmanship. His constant pursuit of perfection and the rescue of Lindon through the three Elven rings made him an easy victim for Sauron.
