In fact, the “new” name is due to an old Tolkien tradition. The names that the British cult author gave his characters had etymological backgrounds. He wanted these word origins to be preserved in the translations as well. Thus, Tolkien worked on the first German-language translations of his works.
The name Poppy comes from Old English and refers to the cultivation of poppies, which was practiced from the early 15th century. The German equivalent of the name is Magsame, which means something like “poppy seeds”.
So we can see that Amazon had Tolkien’s spirit in mind when translating the name, which may at first seem a bit odd to some viewers. The name Magsame still exists in some regions of Germany today.
