- Galadriel tells Theo that she is already married to the Elf, but that Celeborn disappeared in the fight against Morgoth.
- It is obvious that sooner or later the Elbe will be back on the scene. But where is he now?
In the seventh episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” the bomb has burst: Galadriel has a husband. His name: Celeborn. Of course, Tolkien connoisseurs and fans of the “Lord of the Rings” films know the Elf and may be relieved that the fantasy series adheres to Tolkien’s template, because previously it was criticized that Galadriel should have been married to Celeborn long ago.

But even if we can be reassured that Galadriel is married and that Celeborn is in “The Rings of Power”, something else worries us: where is Celeborn and why is he considered missing? Because this is a free interpretation of the series. But let’s look at how this new interpretation fits into the original book.
Galadriel tells Theo how she meets Celeborn, whom she calls Silver Shell. At the time, according to Tolkien, they live in Doriath, an Elven kingdom that falls in the First Age in the war against Morgoth. They then move away and live in Arvernia, another lair where many escaped humans and elves find refuge.
After the fall of Beleriand, where Arvernia is located, the two live for a while in Lindon with High King Gil-galad before founding the realm of Eregion, which they later cede to Celebrimbor to found Lothlórien, which we learn from the “The Lord of Rings” movies know.
The series probably interprets the story in such a way that Celeborn does not flee with Galadriel, but fights in battle and does not return. Galadriel is subsequently under Gil-galad’s command and Eregion does not appear to have been founded by Galadriel or Celeborn.
The story may pick up here when Celeborn returns in Season 2, because then they will found the elven kingdom of Lothlórien together. But how will this happen and where is Celeborn now?
A long time has passed since the victory over Morgoth and thus a prisoner of war can be ruled out, should it not turn out in the finale that Sauron acted underground the whole time and held Celeborn captive. So Celeborn should currently be with friends rather than enemies.
With The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 confirmed to feature the shipwright Círdan, we expect Celeborn’s story to be linked to his. In the books, Arvernia, where Celeborn and Galadriel long lived, is under Círdan’s protection.
So, in The Rings of Power, Celeborn might have gone to war with Círdan. They may then have settled together at the Gray Havens or elsewhere to recover from the ravages of war.
Elves heal faster than humans, but it is possible that Celeborn suffered a serious injury that initially made it impossible for him to travel. It’s hard to imagine that he wouldn’t be looking for Galadriel.
We’ll find out how the Celeborn story continues next week when the Season 1 finale airs on Amazon Prime Video’s What’s New program. An actor for the role has not yet been chosen. Marton Csokas played Celeborn in Peter Jackson’s films.
