Discover the epic story of Earendil, father of the legendary elf from “The Rings of Power”. As a bringer of light and star in the sky, he shaped the fate of Middle Earth.
- Eärendil is the son of Tuor (a man) and Idril (an elf), making him half-elf.
- He is married to Elwing, a descendant of Lúthien and Beren. Eärendil and Elwing are the parents of Elrond and Elros, the founders of the line of Men-Kings and Elven-Lords.
- He was raised into the heavens by the Valar to shine as a star over Middle-earth.
Eärendil is considered one of the greatest heroes who ever lived and had already accomplished incredible deeds before the events of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. Today Netzwelt introduces you to the father of Elrond and Elros, whom the elves still worship as a star in the sky.

Earendil the first half-elf
Eärendil was born in the year 503 of the First Age as the son of the human hero Tuor and the elf Idril in the hidden city of Gondolin. His noble lineage meant that he was destined for greatness and he inherited the best qualities of the elves and men. The sea and seafaring in particular had attracted him since childhood.
Eärendil’s son, Elrond, was a key figure in the history of Middle Earth. In the Second and Third Ages, he stood firmly against Sauron and fought tirelessly against the Dark Lord. In the Third Age, Elrond supported the Fellowship of the Ring and played a key role in the destruction of the One Ring. Finally, at the end of the Lord of the Rings saga, Elrond sails back to Valinor with the Elves, which finally ends the Age of the Elves in Middle Earth.
After the destruction of Gondolin by Morgoth’s forces, he fled with his family to the south. There a fateful encounter would take place that would have a great influence on the history of all of Middle Earth for ages to come. At the mouths of the Sirion, Eärendil met his wife Elwing, who bore him his twin sons Elrond and Elros.
Earendil the Sailor
Shortly afterwards, Eärendil began his sea voyages in search of his parents. Círdan built him the ship Vingilot, with which Eärendil experienced many adventures on the high seas. Elwing, who was in possession of a valuable Silmaril, remained worried on the mainland. When Feanor’s sons heard of this, their oath forced them to take possession of the Silmaril.
The third clan murder of the Elves occurred. To avoid capture, Elwing threw herself into the sea with the Silmaril. However, the Vala god Ulmo saved her and turned her into a bird. So she flew to meet Eärendil and both set off for Valinor to ask the gods for help.
Earendil, supplicant of the Valar
Eärendil was thus the first mortal to set foot in Valinor. Something that was actually forbidden to Men and was punishable by death. But when the Valar heard Eärendil’s request to intervene in the fight against Morgoth, they took pity on him. Since Eärendil did not sail for his own sake, but to save the Elves and Men, the Valar actively intervened in the fight.
Previously, Eärendil and his wife were given a choice by the Valar. They were allowed to choose which race they wanted to belong to. Elwing chose the fate of the elves and immortality. Eärendil, for his wife’s sake, did the same. This choice was passed on to their children Elrond and Elros, as well as to Elrond’s children.
Earendil the Dragonslayer
The Valar marched with their army to Beleriand and the last great war of the First Age, the War of Wrath, broke out. In the great battle, Morgoth’s legions of Orcs and Balrogs were mown down and scattered to the four winds.
Something the Dark Lord’s minions are still recovering from in “The Rings of Power”. Eärendil went into battle with his now flying ship Vingilot, accompanied by a flock of eagles.
He confronted Morgoth’s last secret weapon, the terrible winged dragons. The greatest of them, Ancalagon the Black, darkened the sky with his huge wings.
Eärendil wrestled him down, and as Ancalagon’s body fell from the sky it destroyed the towers of Thangorodrim, Morgoth’s mighty mountain fortress. The War of Wrath was won, Morgoth was once again in chains, and Eärendil was the brightest hero of the age.
Earendil the Star
Now it was Eärendil the Navigator’s destiny to sail the endless sea for all time. With the Silmaril tied to his forehead, Eärendil set out on Vingilot out to sea into the “Starless Void”.
There he himself became a star in the sky. Thousands of years later, elves and men alike still hold this star in high esteem. In Middle Earth, Eärendil’s star is considered a symbol of hope and it was called “Gil-estel” Star of High Hope.
Earendil’s legacy still resonates in the Amazon series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” through his first son Elrond, who chose to live as an elf in Middle Earth.
And through his second son Elros, who chose a human destiny and became founding father and first king of the human nation of Númenor.
