In the seventh episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2, the Battle of Eregion rages. Elves fight against orcs and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) insists until the end that his friend Durin IV (Owain Arthur) will come to the rescue with his dwarven army.
However, series viewers know that Durin himself has his hands full in Khazad-dum and has to protect his own kingdom from a Balrog attack and the resulting collapse. Will he still be able to help Elrond afterwards?
Elrond and Durin’s friendship makes the elf believe in the dwarves’ help to the end
Already in the sixth episode, Gil-Galad realizes that the elves alone cannot defend Eregion against Adar (Sam Hazeldine) and Sauron. He sends Elrond to Khazad-dum to ask his friend Durin IV (Owain Arthur) to help the Elves fight the Orcs.
Durin IV says yes to his friend and promises to join them at sunrise. As things look increasingly dire for the Elves during the battle, Elrond remains hopeful, but Durin’s forces come and do not come, even as the sun rises.
While Durin IV and Narvi (Kevin Eldon) want to support Elrond, Durin III (Peter Mullan) continues to mine for mithril and is so obsessed with his ring of power that he awakens the Balrog and endangers the existence of Khazad-dum. Narvi gives Durin IV an ultimatum: if you help Elrond, Khazad-dum may no longer be standing when you return.
To save his own kingdom, Durin IV must refrain from aiding Elrond and the Elves in the fight against Adar and remains behind in Khazad-dum.
Will the dwarves come to help?
From Tolkien’s literature we know that the dwarves will help in the Battle of Eregion. Elves and dwarves fight together against the orcs, but cannot save Eregion. Nevertheless, the dwarves remain loyal to the elves and close their gates to Sauron, whereupon he learns to hate the dwarves.
Above all, Sauron underestimated the stubbornness of the dwarves, which meant that the seven dwarven rings did not have the benefit for Sauron that he had hoped for.
Every Thursday there is a new episode of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 on Amazon Prime Video. The finale will be released next week, but “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” season 3 is already being worked on!
