For all those who still have fond memories of street sports titles like NBA Street, there is now excellent news, because the former developers are back in the swing of things.
Ah, those were the days when Electronic Arts didn’t just focus on the big sports games, but also released popular gems like NBA Street alongside them. Unfortunately, NBA Street disappeared from the scene in 2007.
But now there is a light at the end of the court, because a group of the game’s former developers have split from EA and set up their own studio called Play by Play Studios. The goal: nothing more and nothing less than to develop a spiritual successor to the classics based on the Unreal Engine 5.
The plan seems to be well underway, as the child is already called The Run: Got Next and is scheduled to be released in 2025 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. And so that everyone knows, the title has now been officially announced via trailer and can now also be found at Steam be wishlisted.
The feature list includes everything you could want from an NBA street heir. The Run: Got Next is said to be a 3v3 arcade basketball game that is intended to “celebrate the global street hoops culture”. The game is said to be easy to learn, but still includes signature dunks, monster blocks, sweet holds, tricks, logo 3s, alley oops and much more. There are also iconic streetballers for your teams with their own strengths and weaknesses.
The title is also said to have some roguelike elements through the conditions on the playing field, strategic modifiers and drops. The developers also emphasize that everything is handcrafted, from the characters to the courts and animations.
The studio’s co-founder is former Madden Creative Director Mike Young, who confirms that many of his colleagues were keen to bring NBA Street back. Young: “We believe that the opportunity is to bring this type of game that doesn’t necessarily exist anymore to Generation Z, which is social. Playing with friends, playing against friends. We’re trying to offer what the simulation games don’t offer us. Modes like Superstar KO, which were kind of one-offs. We want to make the best version of what the game is.”
You have our blessing, absolutely. Just please, do it properly.
