What Hideo Kojima I was going to present the sequel to Death Stranding at the Game Awards 2022 is something that, to a greater or lesser extent, we all had assumed. And not because Norman Reedus missed the information months ago: the clues offered left very little room for imagination. What was shown in the first trailer of the game, however, lends itself to many theories. Logically, that is something intentional.
The game currently known as Death Stranding 2 (Kojima Productions ensures that it is a working title) will be a sequel as unique as the first part. In fact, despite the fact that Kojima himself had more or less the redirection of the saga, during the Game Awards he assured that during the global pandemic he decided to redo that planned story. and start it from scratch.
And, as you can see just above, for video game fans there is nothing more dangerous -and, at the same time, promising- than giving Hideo Kojima extra time to give him more turns to their own ideas.
As we did with the trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, in iGamesNews We’ve broken down all the details of the sequel trailer for Death Stranding.
Building ties with what was seen in the first game and asking what is happening in the footage shown. Of course, the message that Kojima offers us is already a truly unique starting point: if in the first game the idea was to reconnect a divided world, now we are explicitly asked the opposite: Did we do the right thing by connecting?
A tribute to the original trailer
A Hideo Kojima he loves to pay tributes to his own creations. He himself edited the new trailer as he did with the cover letter of the original game. So it is no coincidence that the first thing we see in the presentation of the sequel are cetaceans, in the form of wooden dolphins, and a crustacean in a childish game of shapes. Something very elaborate to be a children’s game, right?
Two details. Regarding the wooden dolphin toy, we can see a torn sticker with a heart. It is worth remembering that in the first part BB, or Lou, drops heart-shaped bubbles. In addition to this we can see a tiny long-distance truck the size of a Micromachine
A strange cult, to say the least.
One of the most powerful images that the trailer leaves us is a mysterious pilgrimage through an endless desert of what appears to be snow or sand.
This cult manifests itself with a line of individuals dressed in red who carry canes and backpacks. The color of red, by the way, is very similar to Amelie’s dress. The detail of the canes also points in the same direction.
Without going into details about the plot of Death Stranding, in the first game Amelie is presented to us as the natural successor to the presidency of the United Cities of America, having an essential role throughout the events.
In any case, the intentions of this procession have not been detailed, although we can intuit that several of the conflicts that seemed closed in the first game they will be reopened.
BB? Is that you?
Los bridge babiesalso called B.B., are part of the iconography of Death Stranding. These are usually separated from their mother at a very young age to detect Stranded Entities in portable pods and, unfortunately, after a year they are usually withdrawn from service. definitely.
Is the baby shown in the trailer the same as Sam’s BB in the game? We have an unequivocal clue: in the room where Lou is cradled by Fragile we can see his distinctive dream catcher.
In the absence of official confirmation, it appears that one of the little Bridge babies from Death Stranding He has turned into a beautiful little creature. And, in the process, we’re given a small clue as to how much time has passed between one game and the next: a mark on the wall. It seems to indicate that it has already turned two years old. Which is a record for bridge babies.
And what happened to your capsule? Well, it looks like Fragile has put it to a new use as a fish tank. One more detail: very close to the capsule we can see a toy duckling with a crest which reminds us of Ludens, the mascot of Kojima Productions.
A very curious refuge
How Fragile ended up taking care of little BB is one of the questions that Kojima wanted to leave in the air. However, if we review the shelter we can reach some curious conclusions.
More than a home seems to be a temporary infrastructure Designed for emergency escapes. Something that, on the other hand, comes in handy in the trailer.
The shelter is located in a cave not unlike the one Fragile and Sam use as an escape early in the first game.
However, and in this regard, there is an element that will not go unnoticed by fans of the first game: it seems that Fragile’s own skin is much healthier. If it is about Fragile, of course. At least the actress who plays her is still Léa Seydoux.
Who is the hooded man?
Fragile, if that’s her, takes care of little BB knowing that they are being chased. But, Which of the two are you looking for?
Appearances are deceiving, of course, and Kojima has taken pains to create confusion. Nevertheless, it is impossible not to remember Higgs Monaghan, the man in the golden mask from the first game. After all, this one already had his own history with Fragile.
However, the truly surprising thing happens later: after hearing a shot, we can see how a bridge baby capsule undergoes a series of changes and gradually forms the silhouette of a BB with the same wings as the one carried by Fragile.
On strings and sticks
The second part of the trailer is accompanied by the logo that has been showing Hideo Kojima at different times. In it we see the words Drawbridge that, added to the drawing, refer to a bridge bascule bridge and in the middle three strings.
Here we see how the core themes of the first game play out differently. Death Stranding was based on the philosophy of string and sticks with which humans warded off threats and created affective bonds.
The idea of Death Stranding it was for players to reconnect with a humanity doomed and destined to be separated from each other. At this point, it is time to put on the table the premise that is thrown at us at the end of the trailer: Did we do the right thing by connecting?
what happened to sam
After showing the reference abbreviations of Death Stranding It didn’t make much sense to continue having on the bench Sam Bridgesinterpreted by Norman Reedus. The great unknown has been cleared up and the protagonist of the original game could already appear.
Of course, on this occasion it seems that BB has not been the only one who has grown a lot between one game and another. The Sam Bridges shown in this sequel has much grayer hair, though he doesn’t appear to have aged as much in other ways.
Which makes us wonder. how long has it really been since Fragile’s accident with BB? Nor do we rule out that this scene is previous
Sam not only appears to be confined to a conveniently isolated facility, but receives an invitation from the Fragile to join his crew. Which makes us think that they have been apart for a while or, at least, that they have not worked together recently.
That’s a… Metal Gear?
Yoji Shinkawa collaborates again with Hideo Kojima designing both the characters and the mechanical elements of the game. The creative duo has already blown our minds with each project they carried out at Konami and, in this sense, the battleship that emerges and levitates it has all the looks of a powerful Metal Gear. From the nose and cab layout to the crane.
To be honest, we can’t wait to find out if in this game we will be able to drive this beast in case we have to carry out delivery tasks.
It is striking that different brands can be seen on the surface of this armored titan, such as the Drawbridge logo or a kind of squid that clearly reads Magellan.
However, in the end we are offered one more sentence, another piece is put in the puzzle of names and acronyms that is being put together: the final decision was not made by the UCA, but by APAC, a private company.
Fragile carries his own BB when he is with Sam
A small and intentionally hidden detail. When Fragile goes to ask Sam Bridges to join his crew, she carries a bridge baby in the same way as Sam.
It should be remembered that thanks to DOOMS, Fragile has a very special and acute sensitivity when it comes to perceiving stranded entities, with which there is something that does not fit. However, it is even possible that what he is carrying is not a BB, but something else.
One of the last images of the trailer shows us how an apparently empty capsule it becomes filled with tentacles while baby giggles are heard. This definitely did not happen in the first installment.
The mysterious masked guitarist
The last person revealed to us in the trailer is disturbing to say the least: a masked figure with an aesthetic very, very similar to that of Amelia (they even wear the same necklace) but with a masculine bearing. What’s more, we are not at all clear that it is a human, since it seems that we can see its intestines or, failing that, a bunch of cables in its stomach.
In addition to his pints and his mask, two very distinguishable elements: un radar Odradek and what appears to be some kind of futuristic guitar. In any case, judging by the color code, it seems that there is a relationship between this character and the cult at the beginning of the trailer.
During the Game Awards it was announced that the game currently known as Death Stranding 2 it’s in development, and it’s definitely far enough along that we think it shouldn’t take too long to put a date on it. For now, its arrival on PS5 is assured, further boosting the value of its exclusives as a console.
