The House of the Dragon series has just concluded and the ending is now confirmed as the production has spoken out about the sequel and expectations.
HBO has finally confirmed the number of seasons that House of the Dragon, the popular prequel to Game of Thrones, will have. During a recent press conference, Ryan Condal, the showrunner and co-creator of the series, revealed details about how it will all end. Because we know: all good things must come to an end.
The saga of House of the Dragon continues
House of the Dragon was therefore set to end in 4 seasons. Since its release, House of the Dragon has captivated fans around the world with its in-depth exploration of the universe created by George RR Martin. Based on the book Fire & Blood, this series tells the story of the famous Dance of the Dragons, a civil war that tore House Targaryen apart. Although George RR Martin suggested that four seasons of ten episodes each would be ideal to tell this complex story, HBO opted for a slightly different structure.
Ryan Condal has confirmed that the third season is currently being written and production prep is planned for the fall, with filming set to begin in early 2025. When asked about the number of episodes for the third season, Condal stated that he has not yet spoken to HBO about it, but he expects the narrative pace to remain similar to the second season, which consisted of eight episodes.
An intense narrative
The decision to complete House of the Dragon in four seasons reflects a desire to tell the story intensely and succinctly, true to the spirit of the original material. This approach ensures that each episode has a significant impact and the story moves forward without unnecessary filler.
George RR Martin, co-creator of the series, previously expressed his opinion that four seasons were necessary to cover the entire story arc of “Dance of the Dragons.” HBO seems to have listened to his advice, even if the exact format differs from his original proposal.
Warning, the rest of the news contains spoilers. Season 2 ended on August 4, without the long-awaited Battle of the Gulch. This key moment in the Fire & Blood book was anticipated by many fans. Ryan Condal explained that this battle needed more time and space to properly explore.
Condal stressed that the team also wanted to build anticipation for this event. The complexity of the series is such that each season will have multiple feature films. Condal has promised that the Battle of the Gulch will be a real success if the events of Rook’s Rest and Red Sowing are any indication.
