The Sims: Film adaptation official, first playtest of the new part in 2024

It’s official: The Sims is coming to the big screen! And: A first playtest of the next game will take place in 2024!

The Sims series is now almost 25 years old and has enjoyed immense success. a longer blog post The guys from EA and Maxis took this as an opportunity to comment on the future of the franchise – and it has a lot in store. The current The Sims 4 is also discussed, but this report will primarily focus on two other topics: a film adaptation and the new series part, which is currently being developed under the name Project Rene.

Let’s stay with the film adaptation for now: The previous rumors should now be true, because The Sims is indeed coming to the big screen. The film will be directed by Margot Robbie (Barbie) and Kate Herron (Loki).

Previously, in March of this year, there was speculation that Robbie was looking for another suitable live-action adaptation after the success of Barbie in the video game world; The Sims had already been mentioned in this context. Now EA has finalized a deal with Amazon MGM Studios to bring the Sims film to life.

Herron, who is responsible for the first season of Loki, will direct and co-write the script with Briony Redman (Doctor Who). Robbie’s company LuckyChap will produce the film together with Vertigo Entertainment. Herron and Redman are also executive producers of the project, about which more information will be announced in the future.

And on the video game front? The focus is still on the new Sims part, Project Rene, which does not necessarily have to be a direct successor to The Sims 5, because the new game is by no means intended to completely replace the existing The Sims 4, as has now become clear in some statements.

Either way, some players will be able to see for themselves how Project Rene will actually look this year. A “small, invitation-only playtest for Project Rene” has been announced for fall 2024.
