news culture The strike in Hollywood explodes, and the actors want to join in too. On the way to a revolution?
While the writers’ strike has been sweeping Hollywood for six weeks, the movement is far from abating. Another not unimportant professional group could get involved in wrestling and the impact could be significant on the production of films and series.
A strike that lasts?
It’s a movement that’s deadlocked. Almost 11,000 screenwriters have been on strike since May 2 and the situation is obviously far from calm. When we discover movies and series, sometimes we don’t measure all the talent behind creating stories and characters. It’s a real job (even a calling) and without this pool of talent, many production schedules will explode! It’s not the first time that all of Hollywood has faced such a strike, but it could “continue through the end of the year,” according to some.
The problem is that many screenwriters are independent (freelance) and the increase in the cost of living has not been accompanied by an increase in the price of services and professional guarantees. When we know that studio earnings are up 39% in a decade and that that’s just a 4% increase in screenwriters, we can understand what’s at stake. Especially when, on the contrary, it is pointed out that it is time to make budget cuts. At some point it won’t work anymore…
The actors in the breach?
Screenwriters are crucial in the creation of films and series and their absence is increasingly noticeable. Several actresses and actors have decided to join the movement and it could grow significantly in the coming weeks. According to the rumors coming out of Los Angeles, many professionals are about to join this strike. The idea, of course, is to put pressure on studios to make screenwriters better paid and better protected.
It should be clear that several series are already affected. This is the case of Stranger Things, whose fifth season is on hold, but also of Emily in Paris, which could be delayed. There is also talk of possible delays with The Mandalorian or Andor. In short, it is to be hoped that this strike (which lasted 100 days in 2007/2008) will have a positive outcome. Otherwise, the financial loss could be insanely large. Instead of foolishly losing money, you might as well pay the screenwriters and those who make the movies and series exist.
