As it turns out, the best song in Mario history, the Donkey Kong rap, will be in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie.
In the 1990s, media that wasn’t supposed to contain rap did, and it was clearly written by people trying to be cool and relatable. One of the mediums that featured the rap was Donkey Kong 64, a platformer developed by Rare, the team behind the original Donkey Kong Country and other classics like B anjo-Bear. Rap, simply called DK rap, isn’t what I’d call a really good song, and neither does Seth Rogen, as it turns out, who’s the actor of the tie-wearing monkey in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. movie. As Rogan himself confirmed, for better or worse, the classic anthem will be in the animated film.
In a brief promo for the film, Rogen is shown listening to it, noting that “that’s how my character is in the movie, with Donkey Kong rapping.” One of the bad rap songs,” but from the perspective of the guy behind Sausage Party, I think we can leave his opinion at the door.
Original composer Grant Kirkhope seemed overjoyed that his track was in the film, tweeting, “If you told me in ’97 when I wrote the worst rap track ever I can’t be more excited that it will continue to appear in the Mario Bros. movie when it raps! Long live DK rap!”
Chris Pratt, the controversial voice of Mario in the film, recently defended his casting in the film, promising that “the film has a real respect for video games” and “the world of Mario.”
If you’d told me in ’97 that when I wrote the worst rap track ever in the history of a rap track, it would go on to appear in the Mario Bros. movies, I’d be thrilled! Long live DK rap! @Sethrogen https://t.co/CtrTr2eb8Z
