What do you need to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 on PC? This question has two answers: On the one hand, there are the system requirements from the beta, which are quite moderate for a current shooter. And then there’s the required cell phone number, which caused displeasure at the start of Overwatch 2. You can find out what’s behind it here.

These are the system requirements
So far, only the power required for the Modern Warfare 2 open beta has been announced. However, since this took place only a few months before the release and the game was already shown in a fairly finished state, we assume that hardly anything will change here.

The system requirements for Modern Warfare 2 are therefore quite moderate. However, the hardware requirements should of course be even higher if you play on higher resolutions or want more than 60 FPS.
The 25 GB hard drive space required in the beta will probably increase, after all we didn’t have to download the campaign and all other content that was not yet part of the test here. But here too there is good news if your hard drive is already full to bursting. Because you no longer automatically download the Battle Royale Warzone with the game:

What about the phone number?
The Modern Warfare 2 product pages Battle.net and Steam are provided with a note that you must link your account with the platform to a phone number in order to be able to use the game. A Support article provides more information:
- All accounts must be associated with a phone number.
- Each phone number can only be linked to one account.
- Only SMS-enabled mobile phones are supported.
- The service does not work with messenger apps (WhatsApp, etc.), Voice over IP, and some prepaid phones
- If you change phones but keep the number, everything will continue to work as usual.
Update from October 14th: meanwhile has Team Ricochet, Activision’s anti-cheat squad, so to speak, announced that only PC gamers will need to link their Battle.net or Steam account to a cell phone number. Console players don’t need to do this. There are only exceptions for those PC users who have previously verified their account in Warzone via SMS – this is then not necessary a second time.
Why is Blizzard doing this?
On the one hand, linking a phone number should fulfill certain security functions. You can use your phone to receive messages about suspicious activity on your account, unlock a blocked account, and reset your password.
A second reason is the action taken against cheaters and toxic players: This makes it less easy f or them to create a new account if they have been banned for their behavior.
Your number should not be used or passed on for advertising purposes.
Could that become a problem?
Overwatch 2 had previously taken the same action, leading to great displeasure among players. There are several reasons for this:
- Players will be excluded: If you don’t have a mobile phone contract or don’t own a mobile phone at all, you can’t play. Prepaid customers in particular felt they were being treated unfairly, since some of them simply cannot afford a contract.
- Requirements are unclear: Some prepaid plans appear to be working under the new rules, while other numbers appear to be arbitrarily excluded. In addition, numbers can probably not work either, that previously belonged to a prepaid tariff.
In Overwatch 2 hat Blizzard die Phone number rules softened after community response. It remains to be seen whether this option will also be considered for Modern Warfare 2.
What else should you know?
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will be released on 28. October 2022 for PC and consoles. However, pre-orderers can get started with the campaign earlier, all important information can be found here:
