The avatar phenomenon will not die out. After conquering the international box office by breaking record after record, it’s the streaming market’s turn to bow to the Na’vis’ will. Even Netflix can’t keep up with the people in Pandora.
A heavy attack on SVOD
It’s been official since the end of the first theatrical run. Avatar: The Way of the Water is the third highest-grossing film of all time internationally, grossing $2.32 billion. However, the career of this blockbuster is just beginning. On June 7, 2023, James Cameron’s film was invited to two streaming services, namely Disney+ and Max (formerly HBO Max), and the result was not long in coming.
In the period from June 5th to June 11th, 2023 Avatar 2 has accumulated no less than 1.941 million minutes according to figures published by the Nielsen Institute. It should be noted that the feature film’s availability has been shortened by two days compared to competing programmes, with the latter not being available until June 7, 2023. Completing the podium are the Manifest series exclusively on Netflix, and finally the SWAT series on Discover on Hulu, Netflix, and Paramount+.

Avatar 2 available in France on Disney+?
The French will have to be patient before they can discover (or rediscover) Avatar: The Way of the Water on a streaming service we assume isn’t taking too much of a risk… Disney+. In France, The availability of a film work on the various distribution channels (cinema, DVD/Blu-ray, VOD, Canal+, SVOD, TV) depends on the chronology of the media. The latter forces rightholders to stick to a very specific schedule from which they cannot deviate in any way.
The media schedule (as of July 2023):
- Sales and rental (DVD, VOD, Blu-ray) – 4 months
- Canal+, OCS: 6 months
- Netflix – 15 months
- Amazon Prime, Disney+ – 17 months
- TV (free channels) – 22 months
In France, Disney+ has to wait 17 months to add Avatar: The Waterway to its catalogue. As the film hits theaters on December 14, 2022 in our territory, the North American entertainment giant will not be able to make James Cameron’s latest theatrical creation available to date on its streaming platform to its French subscribers until May 15, 2024.
