The first trailer for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake has me wondering why we're even bothering with this.
Oh, brother. Another day, another trailer for a live-action remake of an animated film that many are loving, all in the name of… well, let's be honest, this time it's probably just for the money. This time it's How to Train Your Dragon, an adaptation of a hugely popular animated film that's already made a lot of money, and the second installment is an adaptation of an animated film that still has a huge following today. Universal Pictures released the trailer yesterday and I'm just a little pissed off, but before I say that, you can check it out for yourself below and make up your own mind.
The movie does have original co-director Dean DeBlois back, which I suppose, and even though the animated version isn't the most colorful movie in the world, this live-action version still manages to tone down all the saturation. anyway. It's obviously trying to replicate the original very closely in a number of ways, but a lot is lost when translated into a live-action setting. Plus, the lovable Toothless looks weird compared to the realism of everything else – hell, even the logo opted for a less cartoony look, though I'm sure a lot of that is down to the executives and marketing team selection.

At least the cast looks pretty strong, with Mason Thames (Black Telephone) taking over the role of Hiccup and Gerard Butler playing Chief Stoick – who is actually in the animated movie voicing the character, so I think he'll do well. Additionally, Nico Parker (The Last of Us) as Astrid and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) as Gobber are two other strong additions.
Whether I like it or not, it's there, so I'll just have to live with it and we'll all find out how good it is when it releases next June 13th.
