In “The Walking Dead” universe, the Civic Republic Military is the uber-villain that stands above everything. You can read here what is known about the group and why it is particularly important for “The Ones Who Live”.
Over 11 seasons, “The Walking Dead” introduced us to many groups that were sometimes friendly and sometimes hostile to Rick, Daryl and Co. One of these groups is the Civic Republic Military (CRM), which is more of the latter variety. But the CRM not only plays a role in the main series, but also in the numerous TWD spin-offs.

Why is the CRM hidden?
The CRM’s biggest appearance to date was in the series “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”, in which we follow the story of a group of teenagers living in a settlement with around 10,000 survivors, which is regulated by strict law enforcement. The settlement works closely with the CRM and is ultimately wiped out by the CRM.
The CRM is looking for a cure for the zombie virus, but there seems to be less of a humanitarian purpose behind it than a tool for the total seizure of power in the post-apocalyptic world of “The Walking Dead”.
Anyone who stands in the way of the CRM or is even a nuisance will be wiped out by the military group. Many questions about the CRM still need to be answered, especially with the upcoming spin-off about Michonne and Rick, “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live,” but we’ll summarize what’s known so far.
The CRM is the military of the Civic Republic
The Civic Republic was properly shown for the first time in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. The CRM, as the name suggests, is the military law enforcement force that belongs to the Civic Republic. The main focus, at least officially, is the fight against undead and enemy groups.
But the CRM not only has the Civic Republic’s well-being in mind, but also controls the population through intimidation measures. They also take action against residents who want to leave the safe walls of the Civic Republic or who could pose a danger to the rest of the population.
The CRM is very well equipped, they have helicopters and other vehicles that other smaller communities do not have.
The Civic Republic is probably the largest community of survivors
Not only is the CRM well-equipped, but the Civic Republic is also logically very rich in important resources. The community is probably the largest settlement we have ever seen, with more than 200,000 survivors. It’s in Philadelphia, where life probably feels almost the same as it did before the apocalypse.
The Civic Republic has alliances with several settlements, but the most important are the large communities in Portland and Omaha. The alliance of the three is represented by the three rings of the CRM logo, which can also be seen on the CRM helicopters.
Thanks to the many alliances, the Civic Republic is very well supplied. The CRM collects vehicles, food, medicine, weapons and much more. But through these alliances, the CRM also looks for strong human test subjects for “Project V”. For example, Rick Grimes was extradited to the CRM by Jadis because she made a deal with the military group.
“Project V” and the dark side of CRM
While the Civic Republic seems downright utopian in a zombie-infested world, the CRM carries out terrible orders to maintain this appearance. The CRM destroys the campus colony in Lincoln and the large colony in Omaha without batting an eyelid and kills almost all of the residents. Because if an ally requires too many resources, they will be wiped out.
It is not yet clear whether the Civic Republic knows about CRM’s machinations. Scientists like Dr. For example, Belshaw doesn’t seem to know anything about Project V, the CRM’s secret project through which the military group is trying to find a cure for the zombie virus. The kidnapped test subjects are subjected to cruel experiments. But the remedy is intended to serve as a means of pressure so that the CRM can gain even more power and say.
Not only should the zombie virus be wiped out, but an “improved” civilization should be founded with only strong people. Weak people and rule breakers should be eliminated.
This is the role that CRM plays in the TWD spin-offs
For the main series, the CRM was no longer a big issue after Rick was kidnapped in season 9. “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” then gave us a look behind the scenes of the military unit. In “Fear the Walking Dead” and “Tales of the Walking Dead”, the CRM appeared in passing but was not a focus of the story, as well as in “The Walking Dead: Dead City”.
Things will look different in the new Rick and Michonne spin-off. “The Ones Who Live” will be about Rick’s imprisonment by the CRM and Michonne’s search for him. So we can certainly expect a lot of background information about CR and CRM.
Why is the CRM hidden?
The answer to why the CRM is hiding is simple: the group doesn’t want other groups to know about the CR or the CRM, lest they be attacked or have their resources stolen. However, there are theories that the CRM has been watching Rick since Season 1 and generally pulling a lot of strings in the background.
It is also possible that various members of the CRM were infiltrated into other communities in order to determine which of the survivors would be strong enough to live in the CRM. These theories could intensify with the new spin-offs.
