Some important details about “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” were hidden years ago in the spin-off “The Walking Dead: World Beyond”. You can find out from us what it reveals about the Rick and Michonne series.
The start of probably the most anticipated “The Walking Dead” spin-off is imminent. “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” starts in this country on February 26, 2024 on MagentaTV+ and finally tells us what happened to Rick Grimes in the past few years and whether Michonne can find and save her husband.
Michonne and Rick’s big opponent will be the Civic Republic Military – CRM for short. We have already gotten to know this military organization in almost all TWD series, but since the unit operates very secretly, its true face will probably only be revealed in “The Ones Who Live”.
However, the rather unpopular TWD spin-off “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” has already told us a few things about the extremely dangerous CRM and the Civic Republic.
The Civic Republic is the largest community of survivors we’ve seen in the TWD franchise to date
We have already gotten to know many settlements and groups in “The Walking Dead” universe. But Alexandria, Hilltop and Oceanside were more like small villages compared to the Commonwealth, where around 10,000 citizens live and there is a real infrastructure.
But these settlements are peanuts against the Civic Republic. Over 200,000 people live in the former Philadelphia. Through World Beyond we know that the Civic Republic cooperates with two other settlements, Omaha and Portland. Omaha had around 97,000 residents before the city was destroyed by the CRM; Portland is the smallest of the three safe zones with around 87,000 residents.
The CRM operates independently of Civic Republic
The Civic Republic Military’s first priority is that all of their operations take place in secret. They’re so secret that not even the Civic Republic knows what exactly the CRM actually does.
The Civic Republic does not know that the CRM is wiping out other settlements and killing other survivors. The Civic Republic also doesn’t know that the CRM is conducting research and questionable experiments to find an antidote to the zombie virus.
The CRM kills other communities, even if they are actually allies
It is a great mystery why the CRM destroys other allied settlements and kills their inhabitants. The Civic Republic is actually part of the Alliance of Three, which also includes Omaha and Portland. But Omaha has already been wiped out in “World Beyond” and the destruction of Portland with chlorine gas was barely avoided.
A possible reason that is only mentioned in passing in “World Beyond” is that the military government of the Civic Republic by the CRM is supposed to officially end after 10 years and the CRM by the attacks on the allies, which they always do after a mass attack by zombies make it look like it is creating an artificial state of emergency in which the CRM is allowed to continue to rule.
There is already resistance to CRM
After the protagonists of “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” find out what happened to their home, the Campus Colony in Omaha, and that the CRM is behind it, they try to at least save Portland from the same fate. They destroy the chlorine gas to be used in the attack and Iris, Elton and Asha go to warn Portland about the CRM. So there is already a small group that knows the secret of CRM and is rebelling against it.
Once Michonne and Rick realize the true cruelty of the CRM, they will surely try to stop the military unit sooner or later.
The CRM experiments on people they previously classified as “A”s
One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Rick Grimes’ disappearance in “The Walking Dead” was that Jadis first told the CRM that Rick was an “A” only to then affirm that he was a “B.” What this classification meant was unknown until “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” aired.
Jadis explains that A-persons are those on whom the CRM conducts torturous experiments, and she simply wanted to spare Rick that fate. We don’t find out what the B-Persons’ “job” is until “The Ones Who Live,” but apparently they perform “menial” tasks like eliminating zombies, as we see Rick doing this job in the trailer for the series.
The CRM uses chlorine gas to quickly kill survivors outside the Civic Republic
The chlorine gas that we see in the trailer for “The Ones Who Live” was already used in “World Beyond”. The CRM attacks Michonne and a group of allies with the chemical weapon. From the attack on Omaha we know how disastrous the use of the gas was: the entire colony was killed.
Jadis is now a senior member of the CRM
“The Walking Dead: World Beyond” revealed what happened to Jadis after she turned Rick over to the CRM. She has become a CRM soldier herself and has risen to high-ranking member, especially after getting rid of Lieutenant Colonel Kublek.
In “The Ones Who Live” she could either be very dangerous to Rick or be a great help to him in his escape.
The leader of the CRM is Major General Beale
Already in “World Beyond” we hear about Major General Beale, the leader of the CRM. We already know that Beale will become an antagonist to Rick Grimes in The Ones Who Live. Since Beale was already seen in the trailer and had a conversation with Rick, we assume that he will play a big role.

Rick Grimes is important to CRM
Jadis spared Rick’s life with his “B” classification. She reveals in “World Beyond” that she thinks he’s more of an “A” and also that she thinks Rick is important for the CRM. Maybe she wanted to have a strong military ally in Rick. Either way, Rick could have significant influence over the military organization.
