Central to the story of “The Wheel of Time” are the Aes Sedai, a kind of magician. In the following article we explain everything about their powers, members, origin and history.
“The Wheel of Time”: The Origin and History of the Aes Sedai
3000 years before the events of “The Wheel of Time”, in the age of legends, both men and women could become members of the Aes Sedai. The organization of magic users draws its strength from the One power. She is the source of her strength. Women use Saidar and men use Saidin.
However, the war of power changed everything. Although the Aes Sedai were able to ultimately defeat the Dark King and lock him back in his prison, the powerful evil being that exists outside of time, caused the blemish on Saidin.
As a result, the men among the Aes Sedai went mad. Unchecked, they killed large parts of the population and even shifted continents.
Since then, only women have been allowed to become Aes Sedai.

What else is “Peaky Blinders” star Cillian Murphy known for?
Since, of course, quite a few people have been afraid of the Aes Sedai since these events, they have sworn an oath since then, and that too can be heard at the beginning of the newly released trailer for the Amazon Prime series.
“The wheel of time”: the powers of the Aes Sedai explained
Power directors now make use of the one power that can be interwoven for specific purposes. However, this is only possible temporarily. The elements water, fire, air, earth and spirit can be used or connected to the tissues of the one power.
For example, power directors of the Aes Sedai can create storms or fires, heal wounds or give strength. The life expectancy of the Aes Sedai themselves also increases considerably through the use of the One Power. The oldest among them are over 300 years old!
“The Wheel of Time”: Members and Structure of the Aes Sedai
The center of the Aes Sedai is the White Castle in the island town of Tar Valon. The Amyrlin Seat is the leader of the Aes Sedai. At the beginning of “The Wheel of Time” this is Siuan Sanche (Sophie Okonedo).
Below her is the hall of the castle, the central council of the Aes Sedai.
When they arrive at the White Castle, women are tested for their magical abilities and then accepted as novices. The training lasts for years.
Aes Sedai are able to bind a guardian or gaidin to themselves. These skilled warriors have formidable healing powers and stamina. They can also track down the Dark King’s stain.
Aes Sedai and Gaidin can also exchange emotional and personal knowledge without having to rely on words.
There are basically 7 different groups of Aes Sedai, called Ajahs, each with their own goals and intentions:
- Blue Ajah: You want to make the world a better place.
- White Ajah: You are interested in logic and philosophy.
- Green Ajah: They prepare for the fight and can bind more Gaidin to themselves.
- Ajah Rote: They look for male power directors and capture them to be subdued. This denotes the act of severing from the One Power.
- Graue Ajah: You work as a diplomat and in politics.
- Brown Ajah: They care about the preservation and increase of knowledge.
- Gelbe Ajah: Her specialty is healing.
